Ghost Recon: Wildlands Is The Biggest Launch of 2017 So Far

Based on the amount of sales records that have already fallen this year, 2017 is proving to be a banner year for video game releases. Just two weeks ago, Guerrilla Games newest IP, Horizon: Zero Dawn, managed to grab a number of accolades including the title of biggest launch in 2017, beating out the likes of Nintendo's behemoth franchise The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the same week. It didn't take long, but the biggest launch record has once again fallen, being taken by the recently released shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands.

While it debuted at number 1 on the UK weekly sales charts, the Ubisoft title also managed to score the top spot on the weekly Gfk Chart-Track making it the biggest launch of 2017 yet. Ironically, Tom Clancy's  Ghost Recon Wildlands launched exactly one year after another major Ubisoft franchise broke records for the biggest Q1 launch ever, with Tom Clancy's The Division.

The multiplatform shooter joins the list and pushes the aforementioned PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn down to number two, while Link and Princess Zelda continue to cling to the top five by landing at position number four. Newcomers LEGO Worlds and the well reviewed NieR: Automata arrive at number 3 and number 6 respectively.

Here's how the full top 10 list for last week shook out:

  1. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  2. Horizon Zero Dawn
  3. LEGO Worlds
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  5. GTA 5
  6. Nier Autoamata
  7. FIFA 17
  8. Rocket League
  9. 1-2 Switch
  10. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

There's no doubt that Ubisoft is pleased with how Ghost Recon Wildlands has been received so far, though not everyone appears to be happy with the open world shooter. The country of Bolivia, the location where much of the game takes place, filed a formal complaint with the French embassy last week. The government is unhappy with how the country is portrayed in the game, where it has been taken over by a cartel and essentially turned into a narco-state. Ubisoft responded quickly, stressing that the game is a work of fiction and that the location was chosen due to the rich culture and beautiful landscapes.

With a list of big games still to come this spring, which upcoming title do you think will manage to take the record next? Feel free to speculate in the comments below.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
