New 'Ghost Recon Online' Class Trailer & Beta Details

Ghost Recon Online Classes

With the free-to-play Ghost Recon Online planned for PC in the same year Ghost Recon: Future Soldier would release for consoles, combined with Ubisoft's strict DRM policies, it was easy to believe news that Future Soldier wouldn't come to PC gamers. Instead, to bypass piracy entirely, Ubisoft would Ghost Recon Online for them instead. Fortunately for PC gamers, that's not the case and PC versions of both games are coming.

Our last look at Ghost Recon Online came with a video focused on redefining team play. Today, we delve into soldier specifics as we explore the three different soldier classes players can choose in defining and arming their online combatant.

In Ghost Recon Online, everyone can be a part of the elite special forces team (for free!), joining the digital battlefield as one of three classes, each with their own weapon proficiencies and abilities.

  • Assault
  • Specialist
  • Recon

For comparison, the three classes of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier:

  • Rifleman (Assault rifles and Light Machine Guns (LMGs))
  • Scout (Sniper Rifles and close-range SMGs)
  • Engineer (Shotguns, SMGs)

The gameplay video below depicts an Assault class character wielding a light machine gun, a Specialist playing with shotguns with a riot shield on his back and a Recon Ghost with the traditional sniper rifle. Players will be able to customize their Ghosts and weapons and take advantage of special abilities that help them and their squad mates.

Ghost Recon Online takes advantage of similar systems and gameplay mechanics as Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, from third-person gameplay and features including active camo that renders players invisible, and even three character classes instead of the old four. With GRO taking place also in the near future, there's similar weaponry to unlock and utilize as players progress through killing opponents, completing objectives and earning achievements.
