Ubisoft is shutting down support for game content in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but that’s not the only thing the company is shutting down support for in its catalog. It turns out that the announcement that Ubisoft isn’t supporting Breakpoint also means it’s not going to be putting any more NFTs into the game.
Ubisoft didn’t offer this Non-Fungible Token system inside its open-world shooter for all that long. Ubisoft announced the Quartz NFT system back in December, though there was almost immediately an outpouring of protest from the gaming public. At one point, the company even delisted the video announcing the move because it was getting so many down votes and negative comments.
Despite the backlash against the Quartz NFT system, Ubisoft persisted in selling them inside of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but that’s coming to an end as the company moves on from the game entirely. In fact, according to GamesIndustry.biz, the last “Digit” -Ubisoft’s term for its NFTs - was actually sold almost a month ago.
Ubisoft’s approach to NFTs in Breakpoint was usually clothing items like pants that would have unique serial numbers imprinted on them. It doesn’t appear this particular approach worked all that well for the company as reports surfaced not long after launching the program that the Ghost Recon NFTs were not selling.
That doesn’t mean that Ubisoft is scrapping NFTs altogether. It appears the company believes that Ubisoft Digits could work if they are rolled out differently than they were in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, or perhaps in more popular games. That’s why the company has promised that it will indeed be using this kind of digital item in other games in the future.
At the same time that Ubisoft announced that it was ending support for Breakpoint for good, it promised that other games would soon have the same kind of features the Ghost Recon game offered with regard to Digits. When the firm first announced its program it had said that one of its most attractive features was getting to use purchased NFTs in other games across its library of titles. However, at the moment, it’s not clear what other games are going to offer this system, and therefore it’s not known whether the Breakpoint Digits will be applicable to future or existing games under the company’s umbrella. It appears that most details about the company’s plans will come in the not too distant future.
