Rumors have been circulating for a while that Sucker Punch Productions is working on a brand new PS4 exclusive. The developer, which is known for creating the Sly Cooper and inFamous franchises, has plenty of fans who are eager to see what the studio is working on next.

At Paris Games Week 2017, Sucker Punch put those questions to rest by officially announcing Ghost of Tsushima, which is a brand new IP from the developer. According to an official description from publisher Sony, the game is set in 1274 as the "fearsome Mongol Empire invades the land of Tsushima" and wreaks havoc on the local population and the "legendary samurai" who protect it.

In Ghost of Tsushima, players assume the role of Jin, who is one of the last surviving samurais and must "rise from the ashes to fight back." However, "honorable tactics won't lead you to victory" and they "must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting--the way of the Ghost--as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan".

Sucker Punch has confirmed that the game will be open-world and the trailer hints at a wide variety of environments. From fishing villages that bustle with life to eerily quiet structures among towering trees, Ghost of Tsushima's protagonist will travel across the lands on horseback.

Jin will be fighting to take down the Mongol leader, Khan, an antagonist who Sucker Punch calls an “uncomfortably reasonable killer.” The game's villain is no pushover, but seems to be highly intelligent and has studied the ways of the samurai, their culture, and their language to figure out the best way to destroy them. It should make taking him down a challenge but all the more satisfying.

Ghost of Tsushima open-world PS4 exclusive

Unfortunately, Sucker Punch hasn't revealed a release date for the game. The PS4 schedule for 2018 is already looking pretty packed, with God of War launching early next year and Detroit: Become Human confirmed for next year as well.

As PS4 players already have a lot to look forward to for next year, it would make sense for Sucker Punch to hold its game back until 2019 or even later. Given that the developer hopes to make Ghost of Tsushima look incredibly realistic, it may need until then to make sure the game is the best it can be. In that case, the wait will be worth it.

Ghost of Tsushima is currently in development for PS4.
