Ghost of Tsushima is set to allow players to explore Feudal Japan in a large open world. As a result of this exciting premise, Ghost of Tsushima is one of the most anticipated games of the year and it seems that the game has plenty to offer all kinds of players. One particularly striking part of the trailers has been the clear cinematic quality to the gameplay and the team behind the game later revealed an interesting option for players who enjoy cinematography.

A black and white mode is set to feature in Ghost of Tsushima to pay homage to the samurai films that have inspired it. Ghost of Tsushima wears its inspiration on its sleeve but the cinema mode now has a very fitting title. After getting the permission of the Kurosawa Estate, the game will use the director's name. For those who are unaware of the work of Akira Kurosawa, the director was responsible for some of the most acclaimed and notable samurai films of the 20th century.

The filmmaker made films such as Seven Samurai which served as inspiration for the Magnificent Seven, as well as Yojimbo, and Kagemusha, which was executive produced by George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. Undoubtedly, Kurosawa is a key name in Japanese cinema and it seems that the developer behind  Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch Productions, was keen to pay homage.

Creative director Jason Connell explained that as the team developed the black and white mode they were debating a title for it, "What do we call this special mode that we created, this black-and-white throwback? We threw out a bunch of different words and we thought, ‘What would be awesome would be if we could call it Kurosawa Mode.’ To do that, we felt that we needed to reach out to the estate and see if that’s something they’d be interested in." As it turned out, the Estate saw value in the work of the developer and now the mode has a name that pays tribute to its original inspiration.

Ghost of Tsushima has rights to use director name

The black and white mode seems to be more than a color scheme change and Connell claimed that the audio will also be altered to replicate the sound quality of the Kurosawa films. It seems that this visual mode has had a lot of effort put into it and alongside the Ghost of Tsushima soundtrack it will be interesting to see what players think of the end product.

Ghost of Tsushima will be available on July 17, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
