Ghost of Tsushima has taken PS4 users by storm following its release in mid-July. In fact, Tsushima is PS4’s fastest selling first-party IP debut in the console’s history.

However, it seems like Ghost of Tsushima isn’t just selling well in Western territories. In fact, the game is selling incredibly well in Japan, specifically, becoming the 2nd highest in lifetime sales for a PS4 first-party game in Japan.

Ghost of Tsushima has been incredibly well received by PS4 players around the world. However, the game has been received well by those living in Japan just as much – if not more – than from players and industry members in the West. To put it into perspective, Ghost of Tsushima sold out in Japan less than a week after the game launched, something that rarely happens in the industry in modern times. Now, the game has achieved an even more impressive milestone in Japan.

According to independent video game industry analyst Benji-Sales, Tsushima has achieved the 2nd highest lifetime sales of any PS4 first-party game in Japan after only three weeks. In a recent post on Twitter Benji-Sales said, “#1 is Spider-Man, however at roughly 300k physical sales [Ghost of Tsushima] isn't far behind and will surpass it in the coming weeks. Amazing results.” The game easily made PlayStation’s top selling PS4 games of July, with Tsushima reportedly selling a massive 2.4 million copies only three days after its launch.

Those either living in Japan or with some degree of expertise of Japan and Japanese history have come out to praise Tsushima since its launch. Recently, a Japanese professor discussed Tsushima in a YouTube video, giving insight into the game’s historical accuracy and context to the game’s setting. Ghost of Tsushima does an amazing job of detailing the beauty of Japan while also staying faithful to the customs and history of feudal Japan. Thought the game is not strictly historically accurate, it is still very grounded reality.

Even members of the video game industry in Japan have come out to praise Ghost of Tsushima. In fact, the director of the Yakuza series praised Tsushima very highly in a recent interview saying something along the lines that Japan was beaten by the Western studio Sucker Punch in terms of how they lovingly crafted the world of Tsushima. That’s extremely high praise coming from the director of a Japanese game series whose games literally take place in modern day Japanese cities. Needless to say, Japanese gamers are head over heels for Ghost of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima is available now on PS4.
