In Ghost of Tsushima, players will have to collect materials from all over the map in order to complete quests, craft, and upgrade Jin Sakai's armor. One of the many items that players can collect is gold, and it serves a very important purpose.

Gold in Ghost of Tsushima

New players have flocked to this year-old title now that many PlayStation fans are finally getting their hands on next-generation consoles and upgrading their copy of Ghost of Tsushima from PS4 to PS5. And a few of those who have been playing this Sucker Punch title may be wondering just how to upgrade their kitana and the answer to that is gold.

Gold's only use in the entire Ghost of Tsushima game is to upgrade Jin's sword. Starting at Rank IV, players can use gold to make the Kitana stronger at any of the Swordsmiths in the game. Although the Sakai Tanto, a smaller blade that Jin also uses, has gold in the description, this rare material is not needed to upgrade it. It does use the same sword kit as the kitana, however. Since players will want a strong, upgraded weapon for their Ghost, they will need to find gold as quickly as possible and in large quantities.

How to Find Gold in Tsushima

Gold is only used for one purpose in Ghost of Tsushima, and it can only be gotten in one way: freeing enemy-held territories by partaking in bloody Mongol and Samurai battles. But unfortunately, only the larger pieces of land give out gold when cleared completely of Mongol influence. The sections of the map that give out gold when liberated are:

  • Izuhara's Ogawa Dojo
  • Izuhara's Mongol Shipyard
  • Izuhara's Logging Base
  • Izuhara's Logging Camp
  • Toyotama's Kishibe Village
  • Toyotama's Fort Imai
  • Toyotama's Numata Settlement
  • Kamiagata's General Dogshin's Camp
  • Kamiagata's General Bartu's Camp

Each Ghost of Tsushima map section that is cleared will earn players 2 gold. This means that players will need to clear quite a bit before getting into the upper levels of the sword's potential strength. In order to upgrade, players will need:

  • 0 gold for levels 1-3
  • 1 gold for level 4
  • 2 gold for level 5
  • 4 gold for level 6
  • 6 gold for level 7
  • 8 gold for level 8

For those who are quick at adding up numbers, they'll easily note that 21 pieces of gold are needed to get to level 8 while players can only earn up to 18 pieces. Level 8 kitana's are not available during the first playthrough; players will have to start a New Game + in order to get to the eighth and final upgrade.

Ghost of Tsushima is available for PS4 and PS5.
