Netflix has revealed the first trailer for its ambitious sci-fi epic, The Midnight Sky. Based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel Good Morning, Midnight, George Clooney not only stars but is also director and producer of The Midnight Sky.

The announcement comes from Netflix's Twitter feed, which revealed the cast, as well as the 130-second trailer on their Twitter feed. The Midnight Sky focuses on two completely different tales. Augustine (George Clooney) is a scientist, observing the edge of the universe from a remote outpost in the Arctic. As he ponders and observes the stars, news of a great global cataclysm erupts. Refusing to abandon his work, he insists on staying as other scientists flee. Before long, the airwaves falls silent, and Augustine realizes he is alone except for a young girl named Iris (Caoilinn Springal)

Meanwhile, aboard the deep-space shuttle, the Aether, the crew could not be more elated to head back to Earth after reaching Jupiter. As mission Specialist Sullivan (Felicity Jones) laments on her sacrifices for the mission, Mission Control goes silent, instilling fear and uncertainty in the crew. The stories of Augustine and Sully will intertwine in unexpected ways as Augustine races to warn the Aether of what has happened, and the crew of the ship is determined to race home.

The trailer showcases the mystery and suspense of a mysterious sci-fi adventure, one that isn't necessarily focused on big action or a wartime event. The trailer shows disastrous spacewalks, catastrophic malfunctions, unearthly landscapes, and George Clooney embarking on a desperate journey across the ice. George Clooney and Felicity Jones lead a strong supporting cast: David Oyelowo (The Cloverfield Paradox), Kyle Chandler (Argo), Tiffany Boone (Hunters), and Demian Bichir (Alien: Covenant.)

The Midnight Sky releases on December 23rd in select theaters and on Netflix.
