Geoff Keighley has never been shy about hinting at special surprises he has in store at events he is the mastermind of, and it appears to be no different a little more than a month out from The Game Awards 2022 thanks to his latest cryptic tweet. The industry insider tries to make a point of his events being "must-see" for players between appearances by known names, such as Reggie Fils-Aime and Hideo Kojima, and securing sizable announcements to rival long-standing events including Gamescom and E3. His tweet seemingly hints the 2022 award show will be no different, following a 2021 show chock-full of big news and reveals.The Game Awards 2022 will be the ninth event held under the name on December 8 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, which has become the pseudo-home of the event. Keighley began the event in 2014 when the then-SpikeTV ended the Spike Video Game Awards after a decade-long run, most of which Keighley was the driving force for behind-the-scenes. The Game Awards 2021 saw EA and Hazelight Studios' hit co-op title It Takes Two win Game of the Year, beating acclaimed titles including Deathloop and Metroid Dread.In his latest tweet, Keighley didn't mince words by simply saying "the things I've seen" in regard to the upcoming award show. He doesn't go any further into the event, instead leaving it up to players' imaginations as to what they could potentially see at The Game Awards 2022. The overall reaction from other users on Twitter, though, was a mix of excitement for what could be in store to others poking fun at Keighley's attempt to promote the upcoming show as he has for his other ventures, most recently Gamescom's Opening Night Live.
Speculation aside, some players may argue the upcoming show has an uphill battle on two-fronts coming off the 2021 Game Awards' success. The first front for some players will be in viewership, given the 2021 show drew in record numbers across the board between 85 million livestreams and even higher engagement numbers on social media. It could raise the question for some players of if the show has plateaued or if there are some potential changes which could further grow viewership.
The second, more relative front, are the potential announcements Keighley and others from across the game industry have in store for the 2022 show. Players could argue the reveals from The Game Awards 2021 were some of the biggest in the show's history to that point, with titles including Alan Wake 2, Star Wars Eclipse, and Wonder Woman among a few of the games announced along with new looks at games such as Hellblade 2 and Elden Ring. The mix of big announcements and updates may be enough for some players to leave the 2022 show potentially disappointed, though they will have to wait until December 8 to see if that is the case.
