Genshin Impact is known for teasing characters long before their planned release date. Ayaka and Cyno are two popular examples of this, as they were unveiled in a trailer long before the release of their respective regions. Many players also believe that some of the Harbingers fall under the same category. Recently, however, HoYoverse officially announced Scaramouche or ‘the Wanderer’ to be a playable character, generating plenty of excitement in the community.

In-depth story teasers and gorgeous character art just dropped, highlighting Scaramouche’s role in the story of Genshin Impact. However, what makes him one of the most awaited playable characters in the game is the fact that he’s shown up multiple times across limited-time events and even the main questline. These appearances have generated plenty of hype around the arrogant Harbinger, making his reveal (or what the community refers to as “drip marketing”) all the more impactful.

Genshin Impact Scaramouche’s Popularity Explained

Scaramouche of Genshin Impact first appeared during the limited-time event Unreconciled Stars. In the event quest “What the Skies Conceal, the Water Reveals,” Scaramouche is revealed to be Balladeer, the sixth Harbinger. This took place all the way back in version 1.1 of the game, which is why so many players already knew about Scaramouche early on. During his appearance, he also mused about the sky and stars being a lie, resulting in multiple theories about the land of Teyvat.

He would appear again in the Genshin Impact Archon Quests of Inazuma, playing the role of a secondary antagonist. The Traveler would confront him in a rundown Delusion factory only to be caught in a trap. Yae Miko would ultimately save the Traveler’s life but at the cost of the Electro Archon’s Gnosis.

Now, Scaramouche is in possession of it. He's even cut ties with the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. Though he’s yet to appear physically in the Sumeru Archon Quests in Genshin Impact, the Traveler sees a vision of him in a dream during Act 3: “Dreams, Emptiness, Deception.”

The Wanderer of Genshin Impact has been teased multiple times, so it’s no surprise that so many players are excited to finally see him being marketed as a playable character. Not only that, while his appearances across quests were brief, they were effective. He generated intrigue by hinting that the stars and sky were fake. Later, he established himself as a force to be reckoned with by drawing the Traveler into a trap. Finally, the recent vision in the Sumeru questline revealed that despite his status as a villain, he has his motivations for doing what he does – from losing his own mother to being abandoned by the people he believed to be friends. In short, he was built up to be a mysterious yet compelling character.

On a less serious note, fans of Genshin Impact also like his character design, particularly the huge hat. There’s something weirdly endearing about a fearsome enemy who looks like a child with an oversized hat. So, unsurprisingly, players were happy when Scaramouche’s playable character art depicted him with a huge hat.

Now, two years after Scaramouche was first revealed, he’s finally going to become available as a playable character. There’s no official date for his release yet, but the community is speculating it will be around early December of this year. But as early as now, players are saving Genshin Impact Primogems for his inevitable Wish Banner reveal. Once that happens, HoYoverse will likely move on to the next character they’ll be teasing – perhaps Il Dottore or one of the other unreleased Harbingers.

Genshin Impact is now available on mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
