Genshin Impact has been hugely popular since its initial release two weeks ago, offering PC, PS4, and mobile gamers a free-to-play experience that most think is not egregious in its microtransaction implementation. The game has been so successful, in fact, that Genshin Impact has already surpassed $100m in revenue over its first two weeks of release.

Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad shared some impressive stats about Genshin Impact's run thus far, including that it is the most successful new IP from a Chinese developer. MiHoYo has released a number of titles onto mobile platforms (usually with a free-to-play hook) like Honkai Impact 3rd, but something about Genshin Impact has clearly resonated with gamers.

From the very first looks, the similarities between Genshin Impact and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild helped give the former title a boost. But while the visual similarities are undeniable, Genshin Impact has a lot more to it than the Nintendo-exclusive release.

Arguably the most important detail is that Genshin Impact is free-to-play, so the only barrier to entry is access to a PC, PS4, or mobile device. Not all free-to-play games hit it off out of the gate, though, and even those that do find success don't always generate revenue at the levels that Genshin Impact has.

If nothing else, the hooks in Genshin Impact are strong for some players, who are willing to spend real money in the hopes of securing a 5-star character. Through the Wish system, players have a randomized chance of gaining a playable character, but doing so isn't easy. Gacha games, as they are more commonly known, can be very lucrative if the system works well, and apparently, Genshin Impact's is hard to resist right now.

Genshin Impact is available now for PC, PS4, and Mobile.
