Genshin Impact contains an abundance of mysteries shrouded in unexplained lore including the Moon Sisters, cosmically powerful entities that control the lunar cycle, and Paimon. HoYoverse's open-world action-RPG continues to intrigue players with the latest update, version 3.0, and the Sumeru region. Genshin Impact's main story continues in Sumeru, introducing the player to a land enriched by culture and mysteries for thousands of years.
The existence of the Moon Sisters dates back over 6,000 years before Genshin Impact, predating all current members of the Seven like Zhongli. Moon Sisters Aria, Sonnet, and Canon are believed to be the ancestors to the ancient Seelie scattered through Teyvat. Tasked with protecting the world from ruin, the Moon Sisters act as makeshift moons in the Lunar Palace. However, an incident led to the Moon Sisters abandoning their duty and brought ruin to Teyvat long ago. The Seelie withered away into the wisp forms commonly seen in Genshin Impact today, and the Moon Sisters are believed to have perished long ago.
Theories within the Genshin Impact community suggest Paimon is a Moon Sister or a reincarnation of one. During the Aranyaka world quest in Genshin Impact, the NPC Arama refers to Paimon as a silver being just like the moon in the sky. Arama belongs to the Aranara race of plantlike spirits known to have great wisdom in the Sumeru region. The dialogue between Arama and Paimon does not immediately indicate a connection between Paimon and the Moon Sisters, but the Genshin Impact Reddit community speculates about the dialogue being a piece of an overarching narrative. Some Genshin Impact characters have taken note of Paimon's unique appearance, which could be reminiscent of the Moon Sisters legend.
In Tighnari's story quest, Tighnari mentions that normal living beings cannot withstand Withering Zones and elemental powers provide meager resistance for a brief period. Tighnari is aware that Paimon can withstand these corrupted zones on her own, making her appear suspicious in that regard. The possible connections between Paimon and the Moon Sisters were also referenced when Kaedehara Kazuha first appears in Liyue. Kazuha states that the Traveler and Paimon have the "essence of the stars," alluding to their connection with the cosmos.
Paimon's connection with the Moon Sisters continues to be vague, but it appears the Traveler's journey throughout Teyvat is slowly uncovering more details about the distant past of Genshin Impact. During the journey, the Traveler must also uncover the truth behind their sibling's actions and Khaenri'ah.
Sumeru will expand in Genshin Impact updates 3.1 through 3.5 with more story content and areas to explore. The new content could potentially involve ancient civilizations like Khaenri'ah or the mysteries surrounding the Moon Sisters.
