In The Chasm, Genshin Impact players may come across someone called the Old Chou. The merchant offers a digging game where Travelers have a chance to get marvelous merchandise — if they can avoid the bombs. The first time people dig out the prize, they’ll win a Common Chest, then an Exquisite one, and lastly, a large Precious Chest. The Precious version will also come with the Ding Ding Ding, We Have a Winner! Again! Genshin Impact achievement.

The Old Chou game may seem luck-based, but there’s a trick to it. Instead of relying on chance, players can utilize some knowledge to outsmart the ex-Treasure Hoarder. Here’s how to play and ensure a win in Old Chou’s game in Genshin Impact.

The Old Chou Game Rules In Genshin Impact

The Old Chou game in Genshin Impact is pretty simple. On the field, there are 25 holes to dig. Among them is one "Grand Prize" ready to be revealed. But be careful, if players dig out a bomb, then it’s game over. Restarting the game means redoing the digs.

How To Play The Old Chou Game In Genshin Impact

To successfully avoid the bombs and dig up the treasure in Genshin Impact Old Chou’s game, remember the following tips (“Surrounding” refers to top, bottom, left, and right. Diagonal line is not considered):

  1. The four tiles surrounding an empty hole are always bomb-free
  2. Two of the four tiles surrounding an Ore will be filled with bombs
  3. A Treasure Chest is always surrounded by bombs (doesn’t have to be four bombs, but its surrounding is always filled with explosives)

If these directions are still confusing, here’s a visual example to help with the Old Chou game in Genshin Impact:

For example, let’s say that the picture above is Old Chou’s 5x5 field.

And this is what each dig will yield.

Old Chou field - Empty means safe

If players start from the bottom left corner, they’ll find an empty tile. Since the adjacent holes will be free from bombs, then the holes on the top and to the right are guaranteed to be safe.

Next, digging the top one will yield another empty spot. This means players can safely dig the top and right-side again.

However, digging to the next top will lead to an Ore, whereas to the right is a Cabbage.

Old Chou field - Ore means Bomb

Digging out Ores means players need to be careful as two of the surrounding tiles will be filled with bombs.

Old Chou field - Treasure chest surrounded by bombs

However, this isn’t so bad as Treasure Chest is always surrounded by bombs. So if players found a few bombs flocking in an area, then there’s a high chance that the Treasure Chest is hidden right in the middle of them.

The Old Chou’s game in Genshin Impact is a mix of luck and wit. If players come across a Cabbage, then the game gets tough, but getting empty holes and Ores are mostly good news.

Because players will rely on the drops to determine their next step, it’s a good idea to leave the drops on the ground until the game ends. On the contrary, Travelers should pick up the loot before restarting. Otherwise, it’s easy to get confused.

The Old Chou game in Genshin Impact can be played several times a day, but after that, players have to wait until the next daily reset to try again.

Genshin Impact is now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
