While exploring Dragonspine in Genshin Impact's newest update, players will come across a challenging quest that asks them to "investigate the strange ice in the mountains." Normally these types of quests would be solved by approaching the quest target and pressing the investigate button, but in this case, players are asked to solve the conundrum on their own. With so many new things coming to Genshin Impact, it can get a bit overwhelming.

Alongside new characters and a brand new region, the most recent Genshin Impact update also introduces a new mechanic, Sheer Cold. Players that spend too long away from a significant heat source will start to freeze up, and this can have devastating effects. Thankfully, there's a way to fix it, but the game doesn't really explain that well.

The cure for Sheer Cold also happens to be the primary focus of how players can investigate the strange ice in the mountains. Follow the quest marker until reaching an icy crystal surrounded by ice spikes. Players have to figure out a way to thaw it out.

It won't take long to realize that there's no investigate button, and attacking it doesn't seem to do anything either. Instead, players will need to find and destroy Scarlet Quartz, red outcroppings sticking out of the ground that look just like a recolored variant of Cor Lapis. Breaking these and picking up the item they drop will cause red energy to swirl around the character, and now if players attack the crystal it will actually sustain damage. There are four of these crystals in the nearby area, and players will need to find them all.

For the first crystal, head around the back of the icy structure to find it guarded by a couple of Ice Slimes. In all of these cases, the enemies guarding the Scarlet Quartz can be ignored if the player so chooses. The second crystal can be found to the left of the strange ice guarded by a large Frostarm Lawachurl. Unless players are planning on fighting it, it may be best to save this one for last as he'll chase the player around. Next, turn around from the strange ice and head towards the nearby teleport waypoint. There's a Scarlet Quartz on the ground beneath it. Finally, the last one can be found on the cliff to the right, guarded by two magic hilichurls.

Players will want to head back to the strange ice and attack it after each Scarlet Quartz they collect, as this is the only way to deal damage to the structure. After getting all four nearby crystals, the ice around the player will thaw away, revealing the Frostbearing Tree, the Dragonspine equivalent of a Statue of the Seven. Players can use this to further upgrade their character as they collect Crimson Agates scattered around the region.

Genshin Impact is available now on Mobile, PC, and PS4, and later on Switch.
