Ever since the release of Genshin Impact’s newest teaser featuring the Fatui Harbingers, the Twitter community has been in an uproar. There are already tons of theories and fan art, even though most of these characters have yet to appear in the game’s main storyline. This only goes to show how well HoYoverse (formerly miHoYo) handles its promotional material.

The characters of Genshin Impact are one of the game’s primary selling points. They’re what encourage players to spend more in hopes of pulling their favorites from the right Wish Banners. So, it’s not surprising that HoYoverse promotes them so fervently. The Fatui Harbinger teaser, in particular, is an excellent example of hyping up future playable characters.

The Genshin Impact Harbingers and Character Hype

Genshin Impact has always found ways to incorporate its playable characters into the world of Teyvat. Whether they’re a 4-Star or a 5-Star, they’re often given either an event or even a role in the overarching main quest line. This not only allows players to try out their kit. It also gets the community to learn more about said character, perhaps even convincing some to pull on the Wish Banner for them. Overall, it makes the community feel like that character belongs in the world of Genshin Impact, and they aren’t just shoehorned in for the new limited-time Wish Banners.

For example, Raiden Shogun is one of Genshin Impact’s most popular characters. This is primarily because she’s one of the best characters in the game, capable of acting as a damage-dealer or a support character. However, her promotional material is nothing to scoff at. Compared to the demos and quest lines of the last two Archons, Raiden Shogun is unmistakably a powerful god, and that’s partly what spurs the community to pull from her Wish Banners.

That said, there are instances wherein HoYoverse introduces the character long before they’re set to become playable. This was the case with Genshin Impact’s Yae Miko, and Al Haitham of Sumeru is rumored to follow the same pattern. Now, it seems the rest of the 11 Fatui Harbingers will follow suit.

A majority of the Harbingers of Genshin Impact were first introduced in the “A Winter Night's Lazzo” teaser. In the video, HoYoverse showcased parts of their character design as well as a few lines of dialogue, and that was enough to get players talking about whom they want to pull for — never mind that the developer has yet to confirm whether they’re playable. There are also plenty of theories circulating already — partly thanks to the leaked Childe voice lines.

This all shows how masterful HoYoverse is in generating hype for its characters. The Genshin Impact Fatui Harbingers trailer was beautifully crafted, showcasing previously unknown characters, their motivations, and their role in the greater story. Though it revealed very little about each individual Harbinger, it was enough to get the community talking about them. Pantalone, in particular, is getting plenty of love from the community.

Overall, the Genshin Impact Fatui teaser set the tone for what will come next. With update 3.0 on the way, players are excited to explore Sumeru, especially now that Dottore is hinted to make an appearance during its quest line. Pair that with the hype surrounding the new Sumeru characters — Tighnari, Collei, and Dori — and it’s no surprise that the community is brimming with excitement. If HoYoverse keeps it up with the top-quality promotional material, the hype could very well carry over until the Harbingers are released as playable characters in Genshin Impact.

Genshin Impact is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
