Diluc is one of the available five-star characters in Genshin Impact. He’s a sought-after character for his potential as a main damage dealer. Plus, he has an interesting history with both the Knights of Favonius, and the Fatui.

Diluc is one of the five-star characters that can be acquired from the Standard Wish Banner on Genshin Impact. That being said, the Darknight Hero might prove difficult to obtain, given that he shares the Standard Wish Banner with four other five-star characters.

Diluc’s Past with the Knights of Favonius

Diluc of Genshin Impact was the son of Master Crepus Ragnvindr, who owned the Dawn Winery in Diluc’s youth. He also had Kaeya as an adopted brother, and the two lived happy childhoods under Master Crepus’ care. As Diluc grew up, his father told him about his dream of having his son become the most esteemed knight in the City of Freedom in order to protect it from harm. Diluc took this to heart.

The young Ragnvindr trained consistently in preparation for the trials of the Knights of Favonius. At some point, he even acquired his Pyro Vision, which he took as a sign that the gods recognized his and his father’s shared goal. Thus, to no one’s surprise, he passed and was sworn into Mondstadt’s knightly organization. Together with his brother, Diluc worked to protect his hometown from evil. The people of Mondstadt loved the pair of Ragnvindr knights. It wasn’t long before Diluc was promoted to Cavalry Captain — the youngest in the Knights of Favonius’ history in Genshin Impact.

Despite all the commendation and admiration that Diluc got from the Mondstadt populace, only one person’s opinion truly mattered — his father’s. When Master Crepus praised his son for his accomplishments, it was like a flame had lit up in the young knight. His father’s pride became Diluc’s biggest motivation in Genshin Impact, and it spurred him to continue with his duties as a knight. This, however, would inevitably lead to Diluc’s departure from the Knights of Favonius.

Disappearance from Dawn Winery

One day, Diluc and his father were traveling alongside a transport fleet. Suddenly, a vicious monster attacked the caravan, overpowering Diluc. To the young knight’s surprise, his father managed to defeat the monster with a strange, evil power known as a Delusion in Genshin Impact. Diluc had no idea where his father acquired such a thing — a man who had never acquired a Vision. Unfortunately, the Delusion backfired, killing Master Crepus after he’d defeated the monster.

Diluc’s father had told him that the world never turned its back on the faithful. So, the young knight couldn’t understand why this was happening now. To make matters worse, Diluc was told to conceal the truth of what happened to maintain the knights’ reputation. This enraged him, and he promptly left the Knights of Favonius as well as his Vision behind. Diluc then set out in Genshin Impact to find the truth behind these Delusions.

Before Diluc left the City of Freedom, his brother, Kaeya, approached him. Fascinated by their father’s demise, Kaeya decided to reveal the truth of his origins to Diluc. Though Kaeya’s exact motivations are unknown, the revelation caused the siblings to fight, destroying their brotherly relationship. Thus, Diluc left Mondstadt, and Kaeya took his place in Genshin Impact as Cavalry Captain.

Becoming the Darknight Hero of Genshin Impact

Leaving Dawn Winery to the establishment’s head housemaid, Diluc traveled across Teyvat’s regions to learn more about the Delusion that took his father’s life. This led him to the Fatui, an organization of diplomats hailing from Snezhnaya. Diluc learned that Delusions were counterfeit Visions that amplified an individual’s power to the extreme. However, they were also extremely dangerous to use as they could backfire on the user.

In his investigations, Diluc also learned that the Fatui manufactured the Delusions in secret. The former knight even went as far as taking down whole Fatui strongholds to get the information he needed. This, however, drew the attention of the Fatui Harbingers of Genshin Impact — the leaders of the Fatui. They attacked Diluc, who narrowly escaped with his life thanks to a mysterious third party who was part of an extensive underground intelligence network.

Diluc, recognizing his shortcomings, opted to join the intelligence network and operate with more subtlety. There, he met new allies — volunteers who had given up their previous roles and reputations. Some even abandoned their former names. Just like with the Knights of Favonius, Diluc immersed himself in the work of his new group, and his skill helped him rise up the ranks of the organization.

After four years of traveling the world, Diluc finally returned to Mondstadt in Genshin Impact. He once again headed operations at the Dawn Winery, which continued to produce top-notch wine. His return, however, wasn’t given much attention as, at the same time, a mysterious vigilante had started working in the shadows of the City of Freedom. This vigilante had slain the beasts that prowled the forests surrounding Mondstadt and captured the criminals within the city, leaving them bound for the knights to deal with.

This vigilante was none other than Diluc. He had picked up his Vision once again and decided to do what his father wanted once more: to protect Mondstadt. Though, to his dismay, the locals started calling his Genshin Impact vigilante persona the “Darknight Hero” — a name he cringed at. Still, he continued to work in the shadows as the noble, albeit corny-sounding Darknight Hero, protecting the people of his hometown from evil.

In the game, the Traveler experiences this firsthand during the Story Quest “Darknight Hero’s Alibi.” In it, the player must help Diluc foil the plans of an Abyss Order horde in Genshin Impact. Kaeya almost catches Diluc donning his vigilante persona, but, with the help of the Traveler, the former knight gets away without being caught. Thus, the only people who know of Diluc’s hidden identity are some of the trusted staff of the Dawn Winery and the Traveler.

Genshin Impact is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
