Genshin Impact is an ongoing action-adventure gacha game with open-world elements. There's a ton of content in the game, ranging from the main story quests to limited-time events, house customization, and visual novel side stories, and more is added to the game every few weeks. As players complete quests, they gain EXP, raising their Adventure Ranks, which correlates to their maximum individual character levels. So as new content is added, Genshin Impact will sometimes increase the maximum Adventure Rank players can reach to give them more incentive to play.

However, it can be quite difficult to reach the current max Adventure Rank of 60, not to mention the maximum level cap that characters can reach, which is 90. Characters will gain a minute amount of EXP from finishing quests and defeating enemies, but it's typically nothing in comparison to what is actually required: character EXP materials. There are currently three types, but if the max Adventure Rank increases beyond 60, it would be worth adding more.

Leveling Characters in Genshin Impact

Leveling and ascending Genshin Impact characters takes a great number of resources, and collecting them is incredibly time-consuming, particularly beyond character level 60. This is especially true for characters like Qiqi, who has a required ascension material called violetgrass. It's found around Liyue on rocky cliffsides, and there are a couple of areas saturated with them, but one round of collection isn't enough to ascend her at higher levels and will require multiple days of work. Of course, every character requires grinding certain bosses over and over again as well.

In addition to everything required for ascension, players must collect character EXP materials to get them from ascension to ascension, which comes in three forms: Wanderer's Advice, which awards 1,000 EXP, Adventurer's Experience, awarding 5,000 EXP, and Hero's Wit, the most sought-after EXP material as it offers 20,000 EXP. Outside of Mondstat's beginner areas, players will come across Adventurer's Experience probably the most frequently, but it's only effective before level 40 or so. Afterward, players will want to get their hands on tons of Hero's Wit, but at higher levels such as beyond 60, it takes at least a few, and around level 80, it takes several. This is one of the biggest complaints players have about Genshin Impact (even if it's expected for a gacha game): how long it takes to bring a newly-pulled character up to the current party level.

Because of this, players would likely appreciate a new EXP material tier, one that offers around 40,000 or 50,000 EXP. Of course, it would probably have increased rarity, only being offered through difficult battles or only available at higher Adventure Ranks, otherwise, it could too quickly bring characters of lower levels up to the rest of the party, which goes against miHoYo's goals of bringing players back to Genshin Impact frequently. But even if it was less common than Hero's Wit or took more Resin to collect, it would take some of the edge off grinding repeatedly for Hero's Wit through Ley Line Outcrops.

Will Adventure Ranks Cap Permanently?

It's unclear if or when miHoYo plans to increase the maximum Adventure Rank and World Level, or if the company plans to keep the max at AR 60 permanently. This is quite possible; looking at other ongoing online games, many have a level cap of some kind, and leveling is often an important part of the experience. On the other hand, some increase indefinitely, such as Destiny 2; it currently has a pinnacle cap of 1,330, but it rises with each season and expansion. Honkai Impact 3rd, miHoYo's other flagship title, only rarely increases the level caps now and only by a few levels each time. Many players hope miHoYo doesn't increase the max AR again, but if it does, additional EXP materials would make leveling less harrowing so players can enjoy the story and side quests instead of spending that time grinding.

Genshin Impact is out now for Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5 with a Switch version in development.
