Compared to most characters in Genshin Impact, Diona has been around since the very beginning. Naturally, this has given the Cryo bow users a special status amongst the game's healers and support characters. Yet, despite her long history in the game, Diona is one of the harder characters to make team compositions for, larger attributed to her unique build situation.
Between her enabling abilities, shields, homing paws, and of course, grade-A healing abilities, there is a lot to account for when making a Diona team composition. Diona's team members in Genshin Impact will need to be planned around these unique traits.
Choosing A Build For Diona
Choosing a build for Diona is a little different from choosing a build for other characters in Genshin Impact. While she lacks really any DPS potential, Diona is an S-class support character. With this in mind, players will need to choose between using Diona as a healer or a pure support.
The difference is tied to the prevalence of Diona's elemental skill (enabling/support) or her elemental burst (healing/burst support). While the difference between these Diona builds is minor, this can determine whether Diona is on the field often or barely sees the light of day.
Healer Diona
Without a doubt, Diona’s healing capabilities are her most notable feature. Genshin Impact has only a few healers, and unlike many other RPGs, each one has their own unique mechanics.
For Diona, her healing is tied to her elemental burst. Throwing from a distance, she creates an AoE circle that both applies Cryo damage and heals teammates. This can make it a perfect match for Pyro or Anemo DPS characters which excel in close-quarters combat.
Diluc
Diluc is an excellent Pyro claymore user, which makes him perfect for Diona’s elemental burst. Both Diluc’s elemental skill and burst are built to pack a massive punch against individual opponents, making for a DPS that can keep enemies in Diona’s Cryo healing circle with ease.
Infused with Pyro energy, Diluc has a nice synergy with Diona’s burst, making for a steady stream of melt reactions. In addition, because Diona is a shield user, she can counter Diluc’s tendency to take a lot of damage.
Xiangling
For players lacking Diluc, Xiangling is a masterful substitute for close-quarters Pyro action. Most notably, her elemental burst, Pyronado, creates Pyro spirals that can be transferred to another character. When paired with another element’s DPS character, like Kazuha or Razor, this can make for a dangerous moshpit of three elements in the same space.
Raiden Shogun
In addition to a good DPS, players are going to want a battery when using Diona as a healer, or a character that increases energy collection for her elemental burst. Raiden Shogun is largely the best battery in Genshin Impact, which makes up for the disadvantage she has for Diona’s energy due to their difference in element.
In addition, Raiden Shogun offers close-range DPS capabilities with her elemental burst. Entering an Electro sword state, this combination of quick-paced electric firepower and Cryo application can become devastating when combined with abilities like Xiangling’s burst.
Enabler Diona
Using Diona as an enabler is a bit different than utilizing her as a pure healer. Instead of using her burst and then leaving the field, Diona will extensively exploit her elemental skill.
This requires the player to constantly switch to Diona to launch her paws to apply Cryo to opponents. With the added bonus of activating Diona’s shielding, the player will want to use this skill often instead of solely holding her burst.
Yanfei
Yanfei offers the best Pyro application in Genshin Impact (outside of maybe Klee), so she has a very nice play style when on the field with Diona. Unlike with Diona’s healing, an enabling build will require players to have a more ranged-centric team. Catalysts are excellent material for this situation, as they can use ranged attacks that are naturally infused with their element.
Yanfei is a more DPS-styled catalyst, rather than characters like Barbara who focus more on support. In addition, Yanfei’s charged attack and talents are heavily geared towards crowd warfare, making for a good combination of these attacks and Diona’s elemental burst.
Razor
Also having potential for the DPS position, Razor makes for a good match with Diona’s enabling capabilities. Razor is best considered a type of berserker DPS, in which he sees increased attack and speed at the expense of defense. Activating his elemental burst will summon the Wolf Within state, giving Razor the power of his Electro wolf companion.
When paired with both Diona’s skill and burst, this will start a chain of Superconduct reactions, decreasing the physical resistance of opponents (perfect for a claymore user like Razor). Razor’s defense weakness is also offset by Diona’s shield abilities.
In addition, Razor’s elemental skill increases energy recharge. This is a bonus for Diona, who often relies on using her elemental burst.
Genshin Impact is available on mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is currently in development.
