The regions of Teyvat in Genshin Impact are governed by powerful beings known as Archons. Also known as The Seven, these gods are assigned one of the seven elements and preside over their part of Teyvat. Unlike other characters, the Archons have no need of Visions to control their element. Instead, they possess Gnoses, special items that are directly connected to Celestia, from which it’s believed the Archons draw their power.

In the events of Genshin Impact, each of the Archons roam the world, disguised by their human persona. Some did not survive to the present day and have since been replaced by a “new” Archon. Others, however, have persisted until the Traveler’s appearance in Teyvat.

Barbatos – Barbatos is the Anemo Archon and the ruler of Mondstadt. Despite this, he doesn’t really meddle with his people. He’d much rather travel the world and leave his constituents to their own devices, which explains why his ideal is freedom. By the time the Traveler’s story begins, Barbatos roams the world in the form of his mortal persona: Venti of Genshin Impact. He’s one of the few Archons that have lived since the Archon War.

Morax – Like Barbatos, Morax also survived the millennia following the Archon War and has since continued to rule over Liyue as the Geo Archon. He is also one of the oldest characters in Genshin Impact. In Liyue’s Archon Quests, however, the Traveler learns that Morax wishes to retire, to see if his people can continue living without his assistance. Morax then renounces his title and continues to live life as his human persona, Zhongli. Though he still adheres to all his contracts – his divine ideal.

Beelzebub – Beelzebub is better known as Raiden Ei and is the current ruler of Inazuma and the Electro Archon. In contrast to Barbatos and Morax, Beelzebub has only been an Archon for around 500 years. This is because she took her sister Baal’s place after she perished during the events of the cataclysm. Upon becoming the Archon, Beelzebub misunderstood her twin sister’s ideal of eternity, forcing her people into a state of unchanging permanence. This makes up the main conflict of Genshin Impact’s Inazuma Archon Quests. Note also that Beelzebub/Raiden Ei is distinct from her puppet, the Raiden Shogun.

Buer – Buer is currently the youngest of the Seven and the Dendro Archon. She’s also known as Lesser Lord Kusanali as she was born after the death of the former Archon, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. Despite being the Dendro Archon, she has little control over her region. And it’s largely because of the Sages of the Akademiya who have taken over in her stead. Even then, Nahida, Buer’s mortal persona, proves herself worthy of the title “God of Wisdom” in the latter part of Sumeru’s Archon questline in Genshin Impact.

Focalors – Focalors is the Hydro Archon and ruler of Fontaine. As of Genshin Impact 3.2, the region has yet to be released but there are a few hints about Focalor’s character. In-game descriptions point to her ideal being justice, and that she takes the judgment of wrongdoing very seriously. The name of her mortal persona, however, is still unknown.

Murata – In stark contrast to Focalors, Murata is the Pyro Archon’s mortal name. Her Archon name has yet to be revealed, but she’s referred to as the Lady of Fire and presides over Natlan. Based on the Genshin Impact manga, she seems to have ties to Vennessa as Venti calls her tribe the “Children of Murata.” Venti also admits that Murata can be “pretty obnoxious at times.”

The Tsaritsa – Finally, the Tsaritsa is the Cryo Archon and ruler of Snezhnaya. Neither her Archon name nor her mortal persona has been revealed. Even the Fatui Harbingers of Genshin Impact refer to her as her title. Though she is likely the main antagonist of Genshin Impact, her motivations are unclear. All that’s known for now is that she’s bullying the other nations of Teyvat and trying to take control of the other Archons’ Gnoses.

Genshin Impact is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile devices. A Switch version is in development.
