It's a common belief in the Genshin Impact community that players need 5-star characters in order to defeat the Spiral Abyss challenge. There is some truth to that sentiment -- 5-star characters make it easier to surpass that gauntlet. However, that doesn't mean the statistically weaker 4-star characters aren't viable. In fact, there have been plenty of demonstrations of their prowess.

RELATED: Unpopular Reddit Opinions About Genshin Impact

Plenty of factors are involved in this notion such as 4-star characters having typically higher constellations than 5-stars. Sure enough, one would need a good team in order to make a 4-star team competent. Luckily, the Genshin Impact community loves underdog accomplishments and thus flock to tried and tested tactics that these 4-star teams have achieved in the Abyss.

Updated on April 23, 2022, by Nahda Nabiilah: Some Genshin Impact updates also come with new 4-star units. Although 5-stars are generally better than the non-premium counterpart, 4-star characters too can perform amazingly if used properly. In the Spiral Abyss, players shouldn't hesitate to use a team of 4-star units as they can take care of themselves just fine. To add to some previously listed parties, this article is now updated to include some meta composition like the F2P Sukokomon. For players who are unlucky in getting golden characters or are simply looking for a challenge, they can try out this team of strictly 4-star units.

11 Xiangling - Bennett - Xingqiu - Sucrose

Xiangling Bennett Xingqiu and Sucrose in Genshin Impact

Lately, in Genshin Impact Abyss, the team of Xiangling, Bennett, Xingqiu, and Sucrose has been finding a lot of love among all users. The rotation between Xiangling and Xingqiu while getting Supported by Bennett and Sucrose can get into an infinitive loop.

Xiangling with her big AoE takes the responsibility of carrying the damage, while Xingqiu’s famous Burst’s swords will deal immense off-field damage. Bennett will heal and buff the team as Sucrose CC enemies and reduce their resistance to her team’s Elements. Such a team requires high Energy Recharge on each one of its units, plus proper management of the team’s rotation.

How To Use It:

  1. Initiate with Bennett’s Burst.
  2. Use Xiangling’s Skill and Burst after.
  3. Follow with Xingqiu’s Burst and Skill.
  4. Finally, Burst with Sucrose, then use her Skills.
  5. Now keep Normal attacking enemies inside Bennett’s Burst until all Bursts disappear.
  6. Switch to Bennett and repeat the rotation.

10 Fischl - Xiangling - Sucrose - Xingqiu

Fischl Xingqiu Sucrose and Xiangling in Genshin Impact

Fischl, Xiangling, and Xingqiu, all can inflict great damage while they’re off-field. All three of them place their abilities on the field to deal continuous Electro, Pyro, and Hydro damage. Then, Sucrose will keep Swirling all their Elements together over and over again, creating many Elemental Reactions.

This team composition heavily relies on Elemental Mastery to increase the reactions’ damage, and Sucrose can grant this stat to all of her team. So it’s better to give her as much Elemental Mastery as possible.

How To Use It:

  1. Initiate with Xiangling’s Skill and Burst.
  2. Follow with Xingqiu’s Burst and Skill.
  3. Place Fischl’s Oz, either by her Skill or Burst.
  4. Swirl all the enemies and Elements together with Sucrose's Skills and Burst.
  5. Players can use Sucrose’s Normal attacks to get her Skill back if she’s at C4.
  6. C6 Fischl will also attack alongside Sucrose in that case.
  7. Repeat step one.

9 Razor - Rosaria - Yun Jin - Diona

Razor Rosaria Yun Jin and Diona in Genshin Impact

Razor doesn’t need an explanation of how good he is with dealing Physical damage. He can carry the team, while Rosaria and Yun Jin buff his Critical Rate and Normal attacks’ damage. Diona will be the team's dedicated shielder and healer.

In addition to the buffs this team provides for Razor, Rosaria and Diona will enable a Superconduct Reaction with their Cryo application. Razor will trigger the Reaction, reducing enemies’ resistance to Physical damage by 40% for 12s.

How To Use It:

  1. Initiate with Yun Jin’s Skill and Burst.
  2. Use Rosaria’s Skill and Burst.
  3. Shield with Diona.
  4. Initiate Razor’s Burst and go berserk.
  5. Repeat step one, and heal with Diona if needed.

8 Ningguang - Yun Jin - Xiangling - Bennett

Ningguang Yun Jin Xiangling and Bennett in Genshin Impact

This team composition's sole purpose is to maximize Ningguang’s DPS in Genshin Impact. Two Pyro units to trigger the Pyro Resonance, Yun Jin to buff Normal attacks, Xiangling’s crazy never-ending Burst, and finally, Bennett’s Burst to take Ningguang damage to the roof.

Ningguang's Charged attacks are strong, but her Normal attacks are also amazing. With this team composition, anything Ningguang does is boosted and buffed to hurt enemies around her, especially her Normal attacks. Since Ningguang shoots two rocks, both are buffed by Yun Jin’s ability.

How To Use It:

  1. Initiate with Yun Jin’s Skill and Burst.
  2. Follow with Bennett's Burst.
  3. Unleash Xiangling’s Burst and use her Skill.
  4. Now switch to Ningguang and let her shine.
  5. Repeat from step one when the team’s Bursts are ready again.

7 Beidou - Xingqiu - Bennett - Kaeya

Beidou - Xinqqiu - Bennett - Kaeya in genshin impact (1)

Some calculations have been publicized and it turns out that a C6 Beidou can actually go toe-to-toe with a C0 Eula in the Spiral Abyss. So here she is in her full glory. It's alright if players don't have a C6 Beidou as her support can still provide plenty of damage increases for her.

As always, this team relies on Beidou's counterattack for survival since there is no shield giver. Xingqiu and Kaeya are there for the good old-fashioned freeze. Bennett is the dedicated team healer and buffer; he also destroys Cryo shields fast.

How to use it:

  1. Use Xingqiu's Elemental Burst.
  2. Follow it up with Kaeya's Elemental Burst.
  3. Use Bennett's Elemental Burst.
  4. Use Beidou's Elemental Burst.
  5. Attack normally with Beidou while her Burst is up.
  6. Make sure to stay inside Bennett's Elemental Burst circle while attacking.
  7. Use her Elemental Skill (hold variant) for any big enemy attacks.
  8. Repeat step 1 once Beidou's Elemental Burst is ready again.

6 Ningguang - Xingqiu - Diona - Bennett

Ningguang - Xinqqiu - Diona - Bennett in genshin impact

Players would do well not to sleep on Ningguang and her geo damage. She's actually one of the most competent 4-star characters in the game lore-wise and damage-wise. The thing about Xingqiu's Elemental Burst is that it still attacks enemies from ranged. Couple that with Ningguang's attacks and it's a safe team.

Diona is there to provide a shield, healing, and some Cryo application (for freeze). Bennett as always will buff and heal. He'll also come in handy against Cryo enemies.

  2. Use Bennett's Elemental Burst.

  6. Keep Ningguang inside Bennett's Burst circle as much as possible.
  7. Occasionally, use Ningguang's Elemental Burst for tough or multiple enemies.
  8. Use Diona's Elemental Burst if healing is needed.
  9. Repeat step 1 once Xingqiu's Elemental Burst is ready.

5 Yanfei - Bennett - Xingqiu - Sucrose

Yanfei - Bennett - Xingqiu - Sucrose in genshin impact

Pyro teams are always welcome in Genshin Impact. They're easy to use and consistently deal high damage with the right support. Since Diluc, Klee, and Hu Tao are 5-stars, Yanfei is the prime candidate here in their place. Bennett is there for healing, buffing, and Pyro resonance.

Xingqiu will apply Hydro for Vaporize and Sucrose will shred enemy elemental resistance as well as group the enemies.

How to use it:

  1. Use Bennett's Elemental Burst, make sure it hits multiple enemies.
  2. Target enemies hit by Bennett's Burst with Sucrose's Elemental Burst or Skill.
  3. Activate Xingqiu's Elemental Burst.
  4. Use Yanfei's Elemental Skill or Burst, one or the other.
  5. Afterward, attack with Yanfei's charged attack.
  6. Once Yanfei's scarlet seals run out, use her Elemental Skill or Burst to top it up.
  7. Players can also use her normal attacks to generate Scarlet Seals.
  8. Repeat step 1 once Xingqiu's Elemental Burst is ready.

4 Kaeya - Bennett - Xiangling - Noelle

Kaeya - Bennett - Xiangling - Noelle in genshin impact

In this team, there are two characters who can act as the main DPS but the damage setup usually involves the Melt reaction. Xiangling is the main hero in that regard since Melt triggered with Pyro is more powerful. Bennett plays his usual role. Kaeya is there for Cryo and to act as backup DPS.

Meanwhile, Noelle has a valuable shield and some panic button healing. She can also act as a backup DPS just in case.

How to use it:

  1. Use Noelle's Elemental Skill.
  2. Use Bennett's Elemental Burst.
  3. Activate Kaeya's Elemental Burst.
  4. Use Xiangling's Elemental Burst.
  5. Stick to enemies and watch everything Melt while staying inside Bennett's Burst circle.
  6. Once the Melt setup is over, use Xiangling's Elemental Skill to generate energy for her.
  7. Players can also use Noelle's Elemental Burst to deal damage while waiting for the Melt setup to come online.
  8. Repeat step 1 once Kaeya and Xiangling's Elemental Bursts are ready.

3 Xiangling - Xingqiu - Bennett - Chongyun/Kaeya

Xiangling - Xingqiu - Bennett - Chongyun in genshin impact

For a more control-oriented Xiangling team composition, this is the one. It involves freeze on top of the Vaporize or Melt. Xingqiu can provide that Vaporize reaction and Chongyun or Kaeya can provide Melt for Xiangling to trigger. It doesn't matter much which comes first since the enemies will be Frozen.

Bennett fulfills his usual role here since the team lacks a dedicated healer.

How to use it:

  1. Use Chongyun's Elemental Skill.
  2. Place Bennett's Elemental Burst circle in Chongyun's Skill circle.
  3. Use Xingqiu's Elemental Burst.
  4. Use Xiangling's Elemental Burst.
  5. Stick to enemies and watch everything Melt or Vaporize while staying inside Bennett's Burst circle.
  6. Once the Melt setup is over, use Xiangling's Elemental Skill to generate energy for her.
  7. Players can also use Chongyun's Elemental Burst for any enemies affected by Pyro.
  8. Repeat step 1 once Xingqiu and Xiangling's Elemental Bursts are ready.

2 Fischl - Razor - Diona - Xingqiu

Fischl - Razor - Diona - Kaeya in genshin impact (1)

For an Electro resonance team that works and capitalizes on the Superconduct reaction, this one does surprisingly well. It's a good alternative to a Eula team but with 4-stars instead. Fischl might need to be C6 here in order to be a respectable DPS, otherwise, she'd just be Razor's support. Both of them deal tons of physical damage.

RELATED: Genshin Impact: Things About Anemo That Make No Sense

Couple that with Superconduct using Diona's abilities and it's a solid team. Xingqiu is there for some backup healing and if freeze is needed. Players can replace Diona with Kaeya/Rosaria/Chongyun if they want something more consistent.

How to use it:

  1. Use Diona's Elemental Skill.
  2. Use Diona's Elemental Burst.
  3. Bring out Oz with Fischl's Elemental Skill or Burst.
  4. Activate Xingqiu's Elemental Burst.
  5. Attack with Fischl normally if she's C6.
  6. If Fischl isn't C6, then use Razor's Elemental Burst and attack with him.
  7. Momentarily reapply Cryo to enemies with Diona and then use Fischl or Razor's abilities to trigger Superconduct.
  8. Repeat step 1 once Fischl's cooldowns are over.

1 Beidou - Fischl - Sucrose - Diona

Beidou - Fischl - Sucrose - Diona in genshin impact

This one works similarly to the prior Beidou or Fischl teams except it focuses more on Electro damage. Since that's the main damage source, Fischl doesn't need to be C6. Beidou, however, will benefit a lot from being C6 but it's not necessary.

Sucrose will work to reduce the enemies' resistance to Electro while Diona is there for healing and the shield. She can also provide some Superconduct if needed for Beidou or Fischl's physical attacks so this team is flexible.

How to use it:

  1. Use Fischl's Elemental Skill.
  2. Use Sucrose's Elemental Skill or Burst, aim for enemies affected by Electro.
  3. Activate Diona's Elemental Skill or Burst.
  4. Use Beidou's Elemental Burst.
  5. Attack with Beidou normally.
  6. Players can also attack with Fischl normally if she's C6.
  7. Make sure to use Beidou's Elemental Skill (hold variant) against strong attacks.
  8. Repeat step 1 once Beidou's Elemental Burst is ready.
