With the rapid evolution of technology, and the seemingly untapped potential of iOS devices, Epic Games are pretty optimistic of the Unreal Engine making a big impact on iPhone and iPad devices.

The recent trailer for Infinity Blade, the upcoming iPhone game coming from Epic Games' ChAIR Entertainment camp, proves that iOS carries that potential as a powerful gaming device. ChAIR's creative director, Donald Mustard, couldn't agree more.

"I didn't take it that seriously until we started making this game. Now I'm like, 'Oh my goodness, this is literally going to be the best looking handheld game ever made'. It's way beyond what a DS or PSP could do."

On what looks like a promising outcome for Infinity Blade, not to mention the impressive preview of the Unreal Engine's polished tech demo on the iOS Epic Citadel, Mustard can envision the next milestone of developing with Apple's OS.

"I think it's going to be an interesting future, especially if in two years we can really run Gears of War on an iPhone."

Technical director of ChAIR, Geremy Mustard, adds to Donald's point and brings up a possible concern.

"If not two years, then certainly five years. Well, it could be as soon as two years but within five years that will certainly be the case. It will at least be powerful enough to do that.

Whether it'll be viable from a gaming standpoint that's a different question. Can I look at a little screen for two hours at a time and play a game steadily? "

This brings up an interesting point. It's obvious that the hardware will only become more powerful with each model, but how will the games hold up when they are scaled down to such a small screen in comparison? Additionally, how will the controls be mapped since the iPhone is limited with only touch and tilt controls?

Epic Citadel iPhone

Either way, the thought of playing our favorite Xbox 360 or PS3 games on a mobile device in a few years in their original form is mind-blowing. You can only wonder what stage consoles will be at then, if mobile will achieve such an increased level of graphical quality.

ChAIR also revealed that there is interest from outside companies to use their engine for iOS to develop ports and new IP's, all thanks to the gorgeous Epic Citadel tech demo.

Do you think it's a realistic prediction that Gears of War, and similar games of that caliber, will be playable on iPhones in a few years? What predictions do you have in reference to the future of gaming? Let us know in the comments!

Epic Citadel is available for free in the app store, and Infinity Blade is expected to release sometime this holiday season, price TBA.
