Gears Tactics, a spin-off of the Gears of War franchise in a turn-based style like X-Com or Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, will be available on Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and Windows 10 starting April 28. In preparation for that, developers The Coalition and Splash Damage released a launch trailer announcing that pre-installation is available now.

Most of the trailer is story-driven, describing a plot set 12 years before the original Gears of War in which Sergeant Diaz has to lead a team of recruitable survivors to hunt down a Locust leader known as Ukkon. It also outlines mechanics in Gears Tactics, like there being five unique classes with over 150 skills to equip between them, and the ability to use special executions to gain another move.

One of the bigger promises made in the trailer is that even though there will be lots of customization options, Gears Tactics will have no microtransactions, a system still prevalent in games like MMOs.

Following Gears 5, this spin-off title will be the first game in the series released after studio head Rod Fergusson's departure from The Coalition.

Gears Tactics releases April 28 on PC, and an Xbox One version is also in development.
