As gaming systems grow more powerful, developers continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with visuals in video games. Epic Games' new Unreal Engine 5 provides developers such as The Coalition with the tools to take the visuals in their projects to the next level. Recently, a tech demo created by the developers at The Coalition has released, showing off the graphical possibilities of the new game engine running on an Xbox Series X.

While the demo doesn't represent an in-development title, what gamers saw is stunning. Titled "Alpha Point," the video was set amid what looked like an arid shrine that showed off incredibly detailed rock structures along with dynamic shadows the crept across the dilapidated walls of the structure. The focal point of the demo was a rotating object in the center of the shrine that emitted a red glow. As the object slowly rotated, realistic reflections of the area around the object were clearly visible on its metallic surfaces as particle effects resembling fire were seen on the side walls.

This Unreal Engine 5 tech demo was finally during a video at GDC. The level of detail on display in this demo shouldn't come as a shock to fans of the Gears of War series. The developers at The Coalition, a Microsoft Games Studio team, have been creating impressive visual experiences through their games for years. According to the developers, they took the visuals in Gears of War 5 to the limit of what Unreal Engine 4 could handle. Now with the newest version of the engine available to the developers, they have the ability to push their visuals even further.

This wasn't the developers' only showcase at the event, however. They also gave fans a look at the improvements made to model rendering. Using a male character, the rendering demo provided a look at the highly detailed features of the character such as his beard and the realistic appearance of his skin. With this level of detail available when rendering scenes in Unreal Engine 5, it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern what's real compared to what's not.

This isn't the first time gamers have had a chance to see the potential of Unreal Engine 5. Over a year ago, the gaming community received one of their first looks at next-generation graphics when Epic Games showed off a tech demo built on the new version of the engine. Running on a PS5, the demo was called Lumen in the Land of Nanite. That tech demo was meant to reveal two new features available to developers to help improve their creations. These technologies include Nanite which allows creators to make characters and environments with extremely high levels of detail, and Lumen which is an improved lighting system.

While gamers are still waiting to try high-profile games on Unreal Engine 5 such as Hellblade 2, this tech demo from The Coalition gives those that own a Xbox Series X a reason to be excited.
