When it gets down to the wire for E3 – i.e. the weekend before the press conferences start – many developers and publishers are in one of three phases. Some have already announced their game and are simply waiting to show more, some are holding their surprise for the moment they walk on-stage, and the rest are not yet ready to announce anything but want to get things started with a little tease.

That’s exactly what new Gears of War developer The Coalition is doing on their Twitter account: preparing fans for something big. It's unclear what that something big is, but there’s no doubt that will change at Microsoft’s pre-E3 press conference.

Of course, the safest bet is that a new Gears of War is on the horizon, but competing rumors have fans unsure what form that game will take. Some believe it’s Gears of War 4 that will be revealed at E3 2015, while others think it’s just an Xbox One re-release of Gears of War 1.

There’s strong evidence to support both possibilities, especially with the regards to the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Despite having a strong NDA (non-disclosure agreement) in place, many beta testers for the Ultimate Edition have leaked the existence of Gears of War on Xbox One and even shared footage from the re-release. Needless to say, it’s a pretty safe bet that Microsoft is going to announce Gears of War for Xbox One at E3.

That being said, there is nothing preventing The Coalition from also announcing Gears of War 4, or some sort of new Gears of War game, for Xbox One as well. Microsoft didn’t put The Coalition, then Black Tusk Studios, in charge of simply making a current-gen port; they wanted a new Gears game. Even bringing Rod Fergusson onto The Coalition told us that Gears of War 4 is the main priority for this team.

But for now, though, we will have to wait and see what happens on the other side of the countdown timer. Microsoft is poised to have a big E3 this year, with a press conference that Xbox head Phil Spencer says is jam-packed with games. More importantly, it sounds as if Microsoft will be focusing on the near future of Xbox, and not the far-flung. Fans can also expect Halo and Gears of War to be key focal points of their presentation.

Do you think two Gears of War games will get announced at E3 2015? Which are you more looking forward to: Gears of War: Ultimate Edition or Gears of War 4?
