In 2014, Microsoft released Halo: The Master Chief Collection for Xbox One. An ambitious compilation featuring Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, a remaster of Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4, The Master Chief Collection gives players a dizzying amount of content in a single package. The Master Chief Collection had a very rocky start, and it took some time to get the collection in a technically-sound state, but it's improved greatly in the years since, fixing problems, adding brand-new content, and throwing more Halo games into the mix.

Now it seems Microsoft may be preparing to release another project similar to Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Back in January, noted Xbox leaker Shpeshal_Nick suggested that a Master Chief Collection-style collection was in the works for one of Xbox's major franchises, but stopped short of specifying what the franchise would be. Speculation pointed to the Fable or Gears of War series, but a new podcast has potentially narrowed it down.

Speaking on the XboxEra podcast, Shpeshal_Nick once again did not specify what series the collection would be about, but said that "everyone's guessed it," and hinted it would be Forza, Halo, or Gears of War. A Halo collection is already out, and it wouldn't make much sense to release a Forza collection since it's a racing game franchise, so that just leave Gears of War.

Shpeshal_Nick believes that this collection will be out at some point later this year, and that it will potentially be announced at the upcoming Xbox showcase event. While E3 2022 has been canceled, Xbox is hosting a showcase on June 12 where it will make its big E3-level announcements. A Gears of War collection would definitely fit the bill as a big announcement, though fans will have to stay tuned to find out if it actually comes to pass.

Some might be wondering what the point of a Gears of War collection would be, however. With The Master Chief Collection, most of its games weren't readily available to play on Xbox One, especially since that was before the console launched the backward compatibility program. In the case of Gears of War, every single game in the series is already available to play on the newest Xbox hardware, including the Gears Tactics spin-off game and the remastered version of the original Gears of War.

Perhaps this supposed collection will include a Gears of War 2 remaster or maybe, if fans are lucky, remasters for both Gears of War 2 and 3 to bring the games up to the level of the remaster for the original Gears of War. This way Xbox gamers could play through the entire Gears of War experience in higher quality while they wait for more news on the inevitable Gears of War 6.
