There's no doubt that Gears of War is one of Xbox's biggest and most important franchises. Considering this, it's no surprise that rumors point to Gears of War having a major presence at Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference - a presence that will apparently include the announcement of a Gears of War battle royale spinoff.

This rumor comes from Polygon, which says it's "heard" that there are a total of three Gears of War games that will be announced at E3 this year. Besides the Gears of War battle royale game, Microsoft is apparently set to announce Gears of War 5, which a job posting has already confirmed is in development, as well as real-time strategy spinoff in the vein of Halo Wars.

Three Gears of War games announced at one press conference may seem a little excessive, but at the same time, it may benefit Microsoft to leverage its most popular IP. As admitted by Microsoft itself, the Xbox One is struggling to deliver major first-party releases on a consistent basis, and three new Gears of War games, in three different genres, sound like they could do a good job of filling any first-party release gaps.

Gears of War 5 Microsoft tease

Before fans get too excited about the potential for three new Gears of War games, it's important to note that none of this is confirmed. In fact, Microsoft has made comments in the past suggesting it will not pursue its own battle royale game, which makes sense considering how much it has invested in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. If Microsoft does decide to move forward with a Gears of War battle royale game, it would essentially be competing with itself, as it publishes PUBG on Xbox.

Fans may be anxious to learn whether or not Microsoft is producing a battle royale version of Geras of War, but luckily the wait for answers won't be a long one. Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference will take place on Sunday, June 10 at 1:00pm Pacific, and fans can expect answers then.
