Gears of War 5 Release Date and Cover Art Leak

gears 5 release date and cover art leak

What may be Gears of War 5's release date and cover art have leaked via Taiwan's official ratings board. The release date on the ratings board's profile for Gears of War 5 is a surprisingly soon September 10, though the date was quickly scrubbed from the website. Based on the leak, it stands to reason that Xbox fans should expect an official announcement from Microsoft and The Coalition prior to or during E3 2019. The possibility of the leak being faked or incorrect should be kept in mind, too.

Gears of War 5 was announced during Microsoft's Xbox keynote during E3 2018, referred to at the time as just Gears 5. The Gears 5 announcement trailers featured plentiful gameplay and impressive in-engine cinematics, though its release was ultimately confirmed for 2019. Many expected an early 2019 launch given the E3 2018 showcase, but developer The Coalition has remained silent about the game since. A September 10 release date would deliver on the original release window announcement while also explaining the silence surrounding development in the months since.

As for the leaked box art, there are few surprises to be found. It's a rather standard western box art, focusing more on featuring the protagonists' faces rather than offering any deeper look at the game. Kait Diaz is featured at the center of the art, the Locust Queen Myrrah and Marcus Fenix behind her. Both JD Fenix and Delmont Walker are also shown, as well as a Locust soldier and a mysterious location. It's perhaps the location that Kait is being drawn to in the Gears 5 announcement trailer.

Little else can be assumed from the box art, though it's notable that the title is indeed Gears 5 rather than Gears of War 5. This isn't surprising, however, as The Coalition has officially stated that this was a decision made due to ongoing branding efforts. There's also a label in the upper-left corner of the box stating that Gears 5 is an Xbox One console exclusive, reconfirming the game's release on PC.

It's been three years since The Coalition released Gears of War 4 on Xbox One. Fans of the franchise are likely very much excited for a new iteration of the franchise. Given last year's confirmation of a Gears 5 launch in 2019, today's leak makes a lot of sense. The box art, which seems professionally done, adds credence to the leak as well. If the leak is true, Microsoft will almost certainly make the announcement as part of Xbox at E3 2019, so official confirmation is likely less than a month away.
