Like many multiplayer-focused game series, the Gears of War franchise has long been part of the map design discussion for its uniquely symmetrical maps and tight corridors conducive to intense firefights. Just ahead of Gears 5's multiplayer tech test, a video was posted to YouTube of one of the highly-anticipated sequel's multiplayer maps, called "Training Grounds."

Thus far, few maps in Gears 5 have been unveiled, but the video uploaded today guides players through the Training Grounds map, which appears as is implied in the name. Training Grounds seems to be what has likely been a military training facility for the Gears to be tested for battle.

As was the case with the trailer for Gears of War 3's Academy map, the recently-posted video for Gears 5 offers a wide variety of angles of the map, from close-ups to wide shots illustrating the layout. Training Grounds seems to be primarily exterior, as there are no interior areas shown. There are tight hallways, but they are not sealed off to classify them as "interior."

As can be seen in the flythrough, there appears to be a central area that is adjacent to a tall tower, which will likely be the spawn of an immensely-desired power weapon. Furthermore, it will probably act as an area of focus when it comes to skirmishes involving multiple players.

Otherwise, there are corner areas that can induce claustrophobia. These areas seem to be prone to many tight duels and appear subject to grenade drops or some other weapon that could effectively replace a default firearm in the player's inventory.

The aforementioned tower has the potential to give players a vantage point with a sniper rifle of some kind. If it meets that potential, then this tower area will surely be a popular location for firefights.

The rest of the areas in Training Grounds seem pathways between the most coveted weapons and locations. Objects of cover are sprinkled throughout in traditional Gears of War fashion, and the map ultimately seems to bear a minor resemblance to Gears of War 4's Dam or to a lesser degree to Gears of War 3's Drydock.

Gears 5 is aiming to please, and this map is quite representative of that. Training Grounds is shown as being well-rendered in the flythrough, which could be credited to Gears 5 running in 4K. However, it ultimately checks off many staples of the composition of a Gears of War map, including symmetry, narrow corridors, and points of cover for gripping shootouts.

Gears 5 will launch September 10, 2019 for Xbox One and PC.
