A statue included in the collector’s edition of Gears of War 4 seems to suggest that protagonist J.D. Fenix might have a motorcycle at his disposal at some point during the game’s campaign.
Yesterday, Microsoft detailed the Ultimate Edition of one of its biggest releases of 2016, the hotly anticipated Gears of War 4. Now, there’s information on the game’s collector’s edition — and it might just tease a major set-piece set to be included as part of its campaign.
The collector’s edition of Gears of War 4 includes the Ultimate Edition of the game, as well as some neat extras to please hardcore fans. Along with a keychain and some bonus in-game content, there’s a high quality statue and a lithograph print that both depict new protagonist J.D. riding a motorbike.
We haven’t seen too much of this bike among pre-release materials, so its major focus in these bonuses seems a little suspect. However, a recent interview with producer Rod Ferguson featured comments suggesting that game’s Outsiders faction was inspired by motorcycle gangs of the 1970s.
It would be very strange for the vehicle to be used as the basis for the collector’s edition statue, but not play a prominent role in Gears of War 4. Based on the history of the franchise, it seems likely that we’ll see J.D. take to two wheels during the game’s campaign.
From the Junker mission and final train level in the first game, the Assault Derricks in the second, and the Silverbacks of Gears of War 3, this series has always had a strong vehicular component. It’s easy to see how a motorbike could fit into this succession.
What’s less clear is how a motorbike would mix with the game’s third-person shooter gameplay. The speed of a motorbike seems at odds with the measured pace of Gears‘ gunplay — although it’s easy to see how splitting shooting and driving between two riders could accommodate for that. Of course, we might not see the bike during gameplay at all. It could simply be a hint that J.D. is going to hook up with the Outsiders as the game comes to a close, or it may simply be a trademark of the character that hasn’t yet been showcased in what we’ve seen of Gears of War 4 ahead of its release.
While it’s difficult to come to a firm conclusion, it’s certainly interesting to speculate. The Coalition is really looking to put its stamp on Gears of War with the series’ fourth installment, and from everything we’ve seen so far, the studio’s hard work looks to be paying off.
Gears of War 4 is set to release for Xbox One on October 11, 2016.
