Spike TV's Video Game announcements now total 12, rather than 13, as Major Nelson has just confirmed that the Gears of War 3 reveal for the show has been postponed. Whatever was planned to be shown at the awards ceremony, likely a simple trailer, will have to wait until next year for an event like CES, or another tradeshow. Gears of War 3, which itself was delayed from April 2011 into the Fall, is the third and final episode in the trilogy in the Xbox 360 exclusive franchise.

Major Nelson's blog was updated with the following message only minutes ago:

"I have just learned of a decision to postpone our planned Gears of War news from Epic Games for the Spike Video Game Awards this weekend.  I wanted to share this with you and let you know that while these are never easy decisions, we can tell you that what we have to share for the franchise in 2011 will definitely be worth the wait and we look forward to working with our partner at Spike on sharing this world premier news when it is ready."

Whatever the announcement will eventually be, it has gamers completely floundering. With Gears 3's multiplayer already well described, and a healthy amount of story already laid out, what could Epic have had planned? And what would make them want to delay the announcement when gamers are still angry about the previous delay?

The simple answer would be that with 12 other reveals already scheduled for the awards show, Epic didn't feel their announcement would get the impact they'd like. Can't blame them if that's true. With games like Uncharted 3, Portal 2 and Batman: Arkham City each making an appearance, it's would be easy to be forgotten. Perhaps Epic didn't realize there would be so many huge reveals, and their announcement was much smaller scale than expect? It would be tough following up an Uncharted 3 trailer with a reveal of chainsaw gun concept art.

Or, more likely, someone just screwed up. The trailer wasn't finished, or the VGAs lost their copy of the disc, maybe Cliff Bleszinski got a terrible case of food poisoning and won't make the show.

Maybe Gears of War 3 was canceled, only to be replaced with a Kinectimals cross-over racer, and the team needs more time to make the game presentable.

Whatever the reason, it's very disappointing that Gears won't be making an appearance at the VGAs. We hope to hear from you soon, Epic!

Were you looking forward to the Gears of War 3 announcement, Ranters? What do you think Epic was going to reveal, and why do you think they've postponed it?
