Gears of War 3 is easily the most anticipated Xbox 360 exclusive title to be released this year. Over a million gamers participated during the multiplayer beta in the four weeks leading up to May 15, 2011 – and pre-orders for the game have already exceeded 1 million, making it the fastest selling Xbox 360 pre-order to date.
Epic Games doesn’t just have big plans for the title, but also the way they’re going to let gamers know about their Gears of War 3. The Champions League final match between Barcelona and Manchester United was easily one of the most watched sporting events of this year – so it served as the perfect platform to reveal the world’s first official look at the Gears of War 3 campaign.
Unofficially, gamers have already had their first glimpse in a leaked campaign cutscene which showcases 15 seconds of footage that doesn’t really reveal any story – but does show a step-up in the facial animation for Gears of War 3.
The new trailer features the same footage that was shown in the announcement teaser (the one that revealed the game’s campaign trailer would play during the Champions League Final Match) but focuses heavily on the Lambent threat- as a main point for the coming game.
It seems that humanity’s overall struggle is going to be at the forefront in this next Gears of War installment. It’s clear the Lambent threat has become a serious problem, rivaling that of even the Locust as Lambent tendrils burst through the earth and spider-like critters crawl on the ground inside human camps.
Large scale battles will be making a return with Delta having to fight off what looks like a massive Lambent that was crossbred between a catfish and slug – and then provided with a mouth full of sharp teeth in order to make it threatening.
That’s not the only Lambent threat in the video as a special mutated humanoid Lambet is shown in several scenes fighting the humans – and quite efficiently at that. Notably strong, he throws cars like they’re toys while attacking Delta Squad. In one quick shot he throws one of the members of Delta Squad behind him, closer inspection may reveal that this is Clayton Carmine. Does this mean he’s going to share the same fate as his brothers before him?
A cockpit can be seen at one point in the video, and while my first inclination was to think of space, after a look at the HD version of the trailer – it’s clear this segment will take place underwater in a subterranean crevice (which is more in-line with the Gears of War style).
Towards the end of the trailer we see Marcus extending his hand out to a small mysterious figure. The size seems to suggest that this character is a woman and Marcus approaches her with an expression on his face that seems to indicate he’s about to do something he doesn’t like. Anya’s expression appears to be one of concern, so it could be that Markus is about to console the woman – or kill her.
There are a lot of questions that will need to be answered and while we’re excited about everything the campaign has to offer, we’re still looking forward to the return of Gears of War 3’s multiplayer – where we’ll be more than happy to defend our already proven skills.
Are you looking forward to fighting the Lambent threat in Gears of War 3?
Gears of War 3 will be bringing Marcus and his father together on September 20, 2011 exclusively on the Xbox 360.
