With Gears 5 now less than two weeks away from releasing, the filesize for the upcoming third-person shooter has now been revealed. Gamers diving into The Coalition's upcoming game on the Xbox One will need to clear at least 50.04GB to face the Locust horde, while those playing on PC will need 80GB of free space to install Gears 5.

The sixth installment of the franchise is due to explore the origins of the Locust horde, with The Coalition promising fans an expansive, emotional campaign that hands the reigns of the main protagonist role to a female character. Players will follow along with Kait Diaz as she explores her familial connections with the Locust Horde, with the campaign set to feature a supporting cast of familiar faces: Marcus Fenix and JD will return in sizable roles, while fan-favorites like Cole, Baird, and even Clayton Carmine are set to appear throughout the campaign as well.

Of course, gamers will want to clear up more than the minimum amount of free space required to install the game: there's no telling how large any potential day one patches might be, and the file size for Gears 5 is almost certain to grow once The Coalition begins working on updates and introducing new content to the game. Gears of War 4 grew to some 120GB in size on the Xbox One, and with The Coalition promising the studio's 'biggest and most extensive' post-launch support for a title yet, it's safe to assume that Gears 5 will achieve similar heights in terms of filesize.

Beyond the campaign, Gears 5 will feature the return of popular game modes like Horde Mode, which brings in several new features and will even have a unique Halo: Reach collaboration in terms of characters. Beyond standard multiplayer modes, the game will also feature a brand-new co-operative mode called Escape, which has players running-and-gunning through a hive in fast-paced action as they escape an expansive gas bomb.

All-in-all, Gears 5 looks to be one of the most ambitious Gears of War titles to date, with studio head Rod Fergusson admitting the developers played things a bit safe with Gears of War 4. Suffice to say, Gears 5 is expected to take everything from its predecessor and dial things up to eleven, though only time will tell how the game ultimately stacks up to its predecessors.

Gears 5 will release on September 10 for Xbox One and PC. Gamers who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass or purchase the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition will have early access to the game starting on September 6.
