Gaming peripherals are pretty common these days, as the hobby inches closer to being a lifestyle than a simple pastime for the most dedicated gamers out there. While gamers would once just have a console, controller, and perhaps a few posters scattered around, it’s possible to get one’s hands on gaming food, phones, and pretty much any other accessory. That list now includes a gaming mattress for those living in Japan, too.
Simply called the “Gaming Mattress,” the setup is a “high quality urethane mattress that supports the sleeping environment of gamers” according to the product’s webpage. It’s being made by Bauhutte, which produces a number of other pieces of gaming furniture, though those are far more conventional gaming chairs and desks. Although not all of the company’s products are that simple, as it produces comfy gaming clothes too.
The core concept here is pretty basic – the mattress is made to make gaming in bed more comfortable. Images of the mattress have largely been accompanied by frames that have room for desks and shelves to be placed around them, making it easier to craft a focused gaming setup. There’s even a table tray shown that fits a mouse and keyboard, for those dedicated to the complete PC experience.
The mattress comes in three sizes, single, semi-double, and double, with a starting price in the ballpark of $250, which isn’t really that bad for a mattress. However, it appears to be much thinner than a conventional mattress, at least by US standards. In fact, the entire setup doesn’t look that comfortable to begin with, especially considering the proximity to the screen. Of course, the only real test would be to lay down on it and test how it does over a full night’s sleep or an extended gaming session.
Watching game accessory companies grow and change has been interesting, especially over the past year and a half. The coronavirus pandemic has spurred some companies to produce non-gaming-related devices for social good, a dramatic shift for their production supply lines. For example, Razer manufactured masks to help with the pandemic, as well as recently unveiling a robot that will help clean up the ocean. There’s no shame in companies shifting to things like mattresses, though.
Regardless, while the Gaming Mattress doesn’t look particularly comfortable, it might be a good fit for those looking to squeeze as much gaming into their life as possible. Of course, that doesn’t help anyone outside of Japan, unless they can figure out a way to have it imported.
