Customers looking forward to the rollout of GameStop's new game rental program, PowerPass, will have to press pause on those plans. According to multiple employees and a spokesperson for GameStop, the heavily anticipated service has hit several snags ahead of its launch, and will now be suspended indefinitely.
GameStop has already begun asking its staff to throw away the store's Holiday Guide, which featured advertising for the PowerPass service, and to replace this week's weekly ad, which also centered around the launch of the new rental program. According to GameStop's spokesperson, the company ran into several issues with the program in testing it for launch. The source stated:
"We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified. We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service."
It remains unclear exactly why the PowerPass program is being halted so close to its launch, especially since it was obviously a major part of GameStop's holiday season plans. PowerPass, which had soft-launched this week for some, was set to give subscribers unlimited access to any used game in a given location for six months for a $60 fee. After that six months, subscribers would also be able to keep one of those used games.
GameStop will also be offering full refunds for those who have already purchased the PowerPass service, provided they return their pass and the video game they have checked out. The company will also allow those who had purchased a spot in the program the ability to pick out any Pre-Owned game for free by way of apology for the inconvenience the sudden halt of PowerPass might have caused.
GameStop has not provided a date for the return of PowerPass, but customer reaction alone will likely prompt a response from the company sooner rather than later. In the meantime, GameStop will be staying open on Thanksgiving for what it anticipates will be a major weekend for the Nintendo Switch.
