Yesterday, the entire gaming community was thrown into an absolute panic when GameStop began calling everyone who had pre-ordered Team Ico‘s The Last Guardian to inform them that the much anticipated game had been cancelled.
Sony was quick to jump in and dismiss the reports as completely bogus, which was a major sense of relief amongst the gaming-fueled masses. While Sony’s confirmation that The Last Guardian was still happening was wondrous news, fans couldn’t help but wonder just how GameStop managed to feel so confident in the thought that development on the title had been ceased to the point they actually began calling up people.
GameStop issued an official statement via IGN that apologized for their oversight, and explained how the situation was just a giant misunderstanding on their end. Apparently, the game retailer removed The Last Guardian from their system because information on the game and its release date have been M.I.A. for so long, that they simply didn’t see the point of holding onto their pre-orders for it anymore. Okay, they didn’t say that in so many words, but that’s essentially what happened.
You can check out the official statement below.
“The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”
So there you have it. The entire thing was a complete mess up on GameStop’s part, and the game will once again be available for pre-order as soon as Sony gets around to announcing an official release date. The worst part about the whole ordeal, however, was that a Last Guardian cancellation seemed completely plausible after some confusing reports that Team Ico lead, Fumito Ueda, was leaving the company after finishing work on the project.
It’s great to hear that the game is still on track, but it’s also pointed out the fact that Sony needs to release some more information on this game to prevent any more false panics.
