The coronavirus outbreak has impacted all facets of society around the globe, from companies like EA asking employees to work from home to major gaming events such as E3 being canceled. Many businesses have also reached out to employees and customers to inform them of the steps being taken to keep the public safe.

GameStop recently added a statement to its website and emailed a newsletter to customers declaring that the company has assembled an internal task force dedicated to establishing procedures that all employees must follow to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“We want to reassure you that your safety and well-being continues to be our top priority,” said GameStop in the statement. Following the guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, the company is now providing all stores with products such as hand sanitizers and disinfectant to keep frequently touched surfaces clean. Any employees experiencing even mild symptoms that match those associated with the virus have been instructed to stay at home until they have been cleared by a doctor to return to work.

Furthermore, GameStop has requested that customers also take the necessary precautions to keep store associates and the rest of the public safe by following the CDC’s self-quarantine guidelines if experiencing any flu-like symptoms. The statement reminded customers that purchases can always be made through the store’s website or mobile app, and there is even a store pickup option that makes visits to brick-and-mortar stores quicker.

Concerns about the novel coronavirus have caused many companies to take drastic measures to ensure public safety. A number of live events such as GDC and the BAFTA Game Awards have been postponed or canceled. Riot Games recently announced that the League of Legends Championship Series in North America would be suspended until further notice, and EA has done the same for its Apex Legends Global Series event.

Relief funds have been started to help indie developers and tournament organizers who will be financially impacted by the cancellations. And the pandemic may even delay the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, which were both expected to release sometime during the holiday 2020 season.

“We are all in this together,” concluded GameStop’s announcement. “That’s what makes the gaming community so strong and special.”
