Fans of the Dragon Age series are eagerly awaiting the forthcoming release of the next title in the series — Dragon Age 4. While information about the game has been trickled down to fans in small bits of trailers and information from the development team, the game is still largely a mystery to most.
It is known that Solas will return in some form, as will Varric, and so the story will follow on from Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, notably, the protagonist is not the Inquisitor but will instead be a new hero. For players looking for a good RPG fix to keep them going until Dragon Age 4 releases, there is a number of titles that will do the trick.
10 Nier Series
While the Nier series is far removed from the likes of dragons and magical beasts, the franchise offers more than one great RPG that offers brilliant story-driven gameplay in a large open area that is just waiting to be explored. The games also have a knack for having a deep plotline than players first assume, and those who play the games to the fullest get the best experience.
The latest title, Nier: Automata, is arguably the best, but the first title has been remade as Nier: Replicant and is due to release in April of 2021, giving RPG fans something to play until they get a fixed release date for Dragon Age 4.
9 Final Fantasy 15
The Final Fantasy series is a giant in the gaming industry and has a massive fan following. Though the earlier titles are a far cry from what Dragon Fans know and love, the latest title, Final Fantasy 15, does offer an experience more similar with its open-world, hulking fantastical beasts to fight, rich lore, and more.
It's definitely a game that can scratch the Dragon Age itch somewhat and fans should be able to find more than one familiar aspect in this game to keep them occupied. However, for anyone new to the Final Fantasy series, it should be noted that Final Fantasy 15 is markedly different from its predecessors.
8 Assassin's Creed Series
Though most of the Assassin's Creed series falls under the action-adventure genre, the later titles took a decidedly RPG turn and have added many beloved RPG aspects into the games, such as romance, crafting, skill trees, and more.
While Origins was the starting point of Ubisoft making these changes, Odyssey definitely appears to be more absolute in its role of "RPG", with the most recent release of Valhalla choosing to build on this also. It's these later titles that Dragon Age fans should enjoy the most.
7 Mass Effect Series
The Mass Effect series is another RPG franchise by Bioware, making it a sibling to the Dragon Age franchise. They are very similar in many aspects, such as gameplay, features, and the focus on the plot and characters, however, instead of a fantastical setting, it offers fans a sci-fi adventure.
The series is set to be re-released soon in the form of the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, offering fans a great opportunity to get re-acquainted with the series or to experience it for the first time.
6 Divinity Original Sin Series
The Divinity Original Sin series has two titles to its name, though the first of these was set as a prequel to the 2002 game Divine Divinity. The games offer a different experience from the Dragon Age titles, giving fans a more classic RPG feel with its turn-based combat.
The great thing about this series is that players are able to share the adventure with their friends as it offers multiplayer. Of course, for those who want to try them solo, the games offer NPC companions to fight alongside the protagonist.
5 The Elder Scrolls Series
The Elder Scrolls series has long established itself as one of the leading fantasy RPG franchises and it has a large fan-following. While some of the older titles are a little harder to access due to their age and availability, the latest numbered title in the series, Skyrim, is not only arguably the best, but is also readily available on all formats including PSVR.
Players become the Dragonborn, a mortal hero with the soul and power of a dragon who must save the world from the threat of Alduin the dragon. Skyrim's world seems endless and offers players hours upon hours of adventure in a lore-rich environment.
4 The Witcher Series
The Witcher series has undoubtedly exploded in popularity ever since the release of The Witcher 3, with Netflix releasing a TV adaptation and the novel series on which it was based even seeing sales boom.
While the first game is only on PC, and the second title is only on Xbox 360 and PC, the third title is much more available to players and is on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Fortunately, the latest in the series is the best title of them all and well worth playing for anyone who loves fantasy RPGs, especially one with a strong, kickass protagonist.
3 Dragon's Dogma
Dragon's Dogma originally released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012 and later had an expanded version released called Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. The game was later re-released for the likes of PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The player becomes the Arisen, the chosen one tasked with defeating the dragon Grigori.
The game was highly praised on release and its popularity has grown so much that Netflix released an animated Dragon's Dogma series. This fantastical RPG is perfect for fans of Dragon Age, offering up familiar gameplay while adding its own unique mechanics such as the pawn system and the ability to hold onto enemies in flight.
2 GreedFall
GreedFall was released by Spiders in 2019 and blended the fantasy RPG genre with 17th-century elements to create a well-crafted, immersive adventure that was perfect for whetting the appetites of Dragon Age fans. The game offers a branching storyline with multiple endings, so players are able to change the plot based on the decisions they make throughout the game.
It shares many aspects that fans love about the Dragon Age series; fantastical beasts, magic, mystery, romanceable companions, a wide-open world to explore, and more.
1 Dragon Age Series
It stands to reason that while preparing to journey into Thedas once more, that a player should revisit the old adventures that the Dragon Age series has to offer first. As Dragon Age 4 appears to follow on directly from Inquisition, this title is naturally the first choice for what to play.
However, Inquisition tied in plot points and characters from both previous titles in the franchise, so for the full Dragon Age experience, fans should replay all three in the series to prepare themselves for the next installment.
