Destiny 2 has come a long way since it was released in 2017. With a rich story and multiple campaigns, fans of the massive looter-shooter series have gotten to see some of their favorite characters rise and fall. While the ever-evolving experience that Destiny 2 generates can be incredibly entertaining not everyone wants to put 400 hours into just one game.

For the gamers that enjoy a lot of what Destiny 2 has to offer but want to experience something new, there are plenty of titles that are similar to the game. The past few years have seen a lot of studios put out games that offer unique gameplay experiences and stories but can scratch the same itch. Many of these titles also bring something to the table that others don’t, including Destiny 2.

Apex Legends and Overwatch

Apex Legends and Overwatch are perfect examples of this. While both games come from lore-rich franchises, they focus primarily on PvP in a way that Destiny 2 doesn’t. Overwatch has been a mainstay for competitive gamers for over five years. With a roster of 32 playable characters, each of Overwatch’s heroes provides unique ways to play and a near-infinite amount of team combinations. With specialized abilities and playstyles, players can choose to tank, support, or deal damage in the team-based game without feeling restricted.

Apex Legends is team-based as well but its roster isn’t quite as big as Overwatch’s. Still, the same idea around specialized playstyle continues though. Each one of the battle royale shooter’s characters provides its own set of advantages. The game also keeps things fresh by rotating and altering maps a couple of times a year, offering new ways to explore classic locations.

As a part of the same canon as Titanfall, Apex Legends also leans into its story roots. Many of the characters have interpersonal relationships, with some peoples’ history being a little rockier than others. While PvE gameplay is yet to be a major feature in the game players that are looking to get more into the story can enjoy some of the great cinematics that have been put out for Apex Legends.

Halo

For even more deep lore Destiny fans can also look to the Halo series. Bungie, the studio that develops Destiny, originally worked on Halo and crafted an impressive universe for John-117 to live in. With epic stories and fantastic locations, the interstellar story of humanity’s fight against the Covenant is filled with emotional moments. While Halo 3 is seen by many to be the pinnacle of the series there have continued to be great Halo games since its release.

Halo’s deep lore spans millennia and explores impressive ancient civilizations as the human race, and quite a few aliens, continue the fight for survival. Right now, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has compiled Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 4 into one collection creating a great place to start for anyone getting into the series. Each of these games has amassed an incredible number of fans and playing through them makes it easy to see why.

While Destiny is its own franchise the first three Halo games can be a great look into what ideas may have been floating around before it became official. Not everything is going to be related but it can still be fun to experience how studios and creative minds develop over time.  Halo Infinite looks like it will be an incredible addition to the Halo legacy as well when it releases this holiday season.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
