Still, not everyone will want to wait for its release to start making their own games. Nintendo wasn't the first company to come up with games to make games in however, so gamers have several other options they can play around in.

10 Dreams

Dreams PS4 Screen With Game Title

Dreams came from some of the same brilliant minds behind LittleBigPlanet and it shows. It came with a built-in title called Art's Dream that showed players what the engine was capable of but left it up to those that owned the game to create their own content for other players to explore.

The game was praised by critics and players alike and has retained some niche popularity as a way to make unique gaming experiences for the last-generation console.

TyranoBuilder was designed to help anyone make a visual novel without having to learn complex programming languages. It has a simple interface that anyone can pick up and use and even comes with some built-in assets for players to start making their first games with.

TyranoBuilder isn't just all for show either — it has been used to create some excellent indie visual novels like Paws & Effect: My Dogs Are Human and Home Office Hell, and DOBROGNEVA.

8 Fighter Maker

Two custom characters fighting

Fighter Maker has had various versions over the years from the one famously released for the PlayStation 1 to the more recent ones produced for PC. It's a perfect way to try making a fighting game for the first time without the complexities of using a game engine like MUGEN.

It has even resulted been used to make a fighting game by Resident Evil 3: Nemesis designer Tomoaki Sugeno. He used the 2002 version of Fighter Maker to create Vanguard Princess which is considered a hidden gem by many fighting game fans.

7 Project Spark

A man holding a strangely shaped sword

While the online service for the game is no longer available, anyone that has previously purchased Project Spark can still create games on it due to Microsoft releasing it with a special free-to-play model for players. Any previously downloaded creations from other players are also still available to play.

While a little complex, Project Spark had its dedicated fanbase that was incredibly sad to see its original servers shut down. There is still a small community that fervently supports the game and players that purchase the game in disk form can still even access some of the DLC it originally offered.

6 N++

An N++ Level

N++ originally began as an Adobe Flash game named N but has become so much more over the years. It comes with several platforming levels for players to work their way to that could be fun all by themselves but the level editor brings it to a whole new level.

N++ Ultimate Edition is even available for the Nintendo Switch so players can try it while waiting for Game Builder Garage to release.

What's simpler than making a microgame? Wario Ware D.I.Y. allows players to make their own minigames just like those found in the rest Wario Ware franchise. The game has a surprisingly robust creation system allowing for a fantastic variety of games — albeit extremely short ones.

The game also does have a single-player mode for players that just want some Nintendo-made fun to play through.

4 RPG Maker

A pixel art RPG

There have been over 40 versions of RPG Maker created over the years and that doesn't even include more specific spin-offs like Sim RPG Maker. It's immensely popular with new and old versions alike being used to create games to this day.

3 Super Mario Maker 2

The level-making system in Super Mario Maker 2 is impressive all on its own. However, the ability to create Super Worlds is where the game really shines. Players can now live out their dreams of making a fully functional old-school styled Mario game with levels they have created themselves. Some famous YouTubers and other creators have even made their own Super Worlds allowing players to interact with their idols in whole new ways.

2 Sound Novel Tsukūru

Sound Novel Tsukūru shows that Nintendo has been trying to help gamers make their own creations since the days of the often-forgotten Satellaview. This special cartridge allowed gamers to create their own sound novels. These are different from typical visual novels as they focus on using music to create a specific atmosphere to tell the story.

A similar concept was also released on the Japanese exclusive Casio Loopy titled Little Romance which has a larger focus on the visual focus of the stories created.

1 Minecraft

A Mincraft Kirby and a custom Minecraft level

Players have been able to mod Minecraft to create entirely new games which shows just how flexible this sandbox game can really be. Even without mods, it's possible to make some basic contraptions to make simple guessing games or things similar to a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. It's the ultimate way for players to make their own worlds for others to explore through at a bare minimum.
