Video games are havens of creativity. The interactive medium gives the people who develop, program, and design games an outlet to express their most profound and enthralling ideas. Naturally, some of the greatest of these ideas are all of the puns that developers can come up with.

Game creators regularly (and thankfully) find places in their games to add some cheeky puns. They might be right there in the game’s title, or they might be hidden in a character’s name. Regardless of where they are, players know they will mostly like come across them at some point during their time with almost any game.

10 Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time

Mario-and-Luigi-Partners-in-Time-1

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time was the second game in the Mario & Luigi RPG series, released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS. In this game, Mario and Luigi find themselves in the strange situation of needing to go back in time and team up with their infant selves to save the Mushroom Kingdom. This scenario is what sets the game up for its punny and perfect title.

It mixes the idiom “partner in crime” with the game’s time travel theme. And with “partner in crime” expressing the idea of close friends who get into all sorts of trouble together, it’s a perfect match for the two sets of Mario brothers.

9 Miles “Tails” Prower

In the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Mile “Tails” Prower is Sonic’s young fox friend. With his high IQ, penchant for machinery, and two tails that give him the ability to fly, Tails have proved to be an invaluable friend and ally during many of Sonic’s adventures.

What many people miss about Tails, however, is the clever speed-centric pun in his name. “Prower” is a portmanteau of “per” and “hour.” Combined with his first name, Tails’ name is based on “miles per hour."

8 Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando

7-Ratchet-and-Clank-Going-Commando

Ratchet & Clank is a series of action-adventure games exclusive to the Playstation consoles. The series has been around for nearly 20 years, and one of its lasting traits is its use of wordplay. The majority of the games’ subtitles have incorporated semi-crass puns of some form. It’s a tradition that began with the second game in the series, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando.

Going Commando introduced many improvements over its predecessor. One of these was the emphasis placed on upgrading weapons. This focus on weapons opened the opportunity for the developers to use a common idiom to make a joke and highlight the importance of artillery.

7 Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is the long-awaited sequel to the original trilogy of Crash Bandicoot games. It closely follows the same gameplay mechanics of the original games and features a story that follows after the events of the third game in the series. In this title, Crash and his friends must keep Doctor Neo Cortex and the other villains from tampering with the space-time continuum.

This game’s title is a pun that plays on the history behind its development. Fans had been waiting years for a proper follow-up to the first three games. “It’s About Time” references both the years that fans had been waiting and the fact that the game’s story is literally about time itself.

6 Joanna Dark

Joanna Dark is the protagonist of the sci-fi series Perfect Dark. In these first-person shooters, the player controls the special operative Joanna as she completes her top-secret missions for the Carrington Institute. Joanna Dark fits the classic “femme fatale” type of character thanks to her combat skills and character design.

To match her abilities and depiction, the developers gave her a name that sounded similar to the French pronunciation of Joanne of Arc, “Jeanne d'Arc.” Joanne of Arc was a prominent historical figure and a heroine during the Hundred Years’ War.

5 Crypt Of The NecroDancer

Crypt-of-the-Necrodancer-1

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a rhythm-based dungeon crawler that puts a lot of emphasis on musical themes. That is made apparent from the game’s title, which refers to the antagonist, the NecroDancer. The NecroDancer is a sorcerer that controls the undead — i.e., a necromancer. He also controls them with his musical enchantments, which is where the “dancer” part of the name comes from.

Additionally, the protagonist is a woman named Cadence, a term that refers to a sequence of notes in a musical arrangement. Players can find puns in almost every part of this clever indie game.

4 The Rabbids

Rayman-Raving-Rabbids-1

Rayman: Raving Rabbids was a party game and a launch title for the Nintendo Wii in 2006. It was meant to take advantage of the Wii’s motion controls, to help introduce audiences to them. And while not its initial intent, it also began the long-running Rabbids series, which stars the titular, rabbit-like creatures.

The Rabbid’s name is a combination of “rabbit” and “rabid.” They combine to highlight the creatures’ design inspirations and their frantic, aggressive behavior and personalities.

3 Kirby’s Epic Yarn

Kirbys-Epic-Yarn-Co-op

The Kirby series is known for including a lot of playful humor in its games. With this game having the theme of everything in the world being made of yarn, Kirby’s Epic Yarn was the only appropriate title. In Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby and his friend Prince Fluff must save both Dream Land and Patch Land from the evil sorcerer, Yin-Yarn.

Yin-Yarn is the one who turns Kirby and all of Dream Land into yarn. “Yarn” has two meanings. It can refer to the fabric, but it can also refer to an adventure’s narrative. This game was Kirby’s epic yarn in both senses: it was an epic tale about yarn.

Link-Between-Worlds-Link

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is the 2013 sequel to A Link to the Past. It follows many of the same themes, character and art designs, world layouts, and narrative elements — and also follows a similar naming convention. This game’s premise involves Link turning himself into a 2D painting so he can slip through cracks in his world’s reality and travel to another world, in order to save Hyrule.

In doing so, he will also save the parallel world’s kingdom of Lorule. The title is both figurative and literal: Link himself is between two worlds and has also created a connection between them.

1 Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Octodad-Best-Game-Dads

Dadliest Catch is the sequel to the 2010 indie title, Octodad. In this quirky title, players control the titular Octodad as he tries to complete tasks in the game’s domestic settings. The issue is that he is a cephalopod, not a human. Helping him complete the most basic of functions takes more effort than most players might expect.

Deadliest Catch is a reality TV show that chronicles the lives of deep-sea fishers. Combining the Octodad with the show’s title makes a funny and absurd comparison between the difficulty of being a deep-sea fisher and controlling the aquatic Octodad.
