As video games continue to evolve, the detail within their graphics and system capabilities become better than ever. There are plenty of games out there that exhibit an intense level of gruesome gore, thanks to the degree of dismemberment that the player can become capable of committing.

When players are given the tools and the talent, they can easily cut off or even destroy other characters’ limbs. In some games, it’s more than just a feature, but a mechanic to best the enemy. However, for a lot of games, it’s just a bonus to the violence of the game.

8 Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 Stay Human - Charge Tackling An Infected Off A Roof

Dying Light paved the way for graphically impressive zombie survival games, and when seven years passed, Dying Light 2 continued that innovation with a new set of impressive graphics and a brand new dismemberment system. Players can use their sharp weapons and guns to slice and explode limbs of the many zombie hordes, and human enemies.

Melee weapons are the player’s best friend in Dying Light 2 because ammo is a rarity in a post-apocalyptic world. These weapons are sharp enough to not only slice through tomatoes but to chop through bone. The graphics of blood splatters are rather impressive as players hack and slash through zombies.

7 Cyberpunk 2077

There’s decent dismemberment in Cyberpunk 2077, which isn’t surprising, considering the game does not hold back on the gore and other gross violence. In Cyberpunk 2077, players can use katanas and their powerful futuristic guns to blast through limbs and bodies like they’re pinatas.

Some guns are more powerful than others, like shotguns and hand canons. Players can tear through limbs and chests without a hitch, and provide themselves with an authentically gruesome experience. Fitting chrome won’t stop the dismemberment, that’s for sure.

6 Ghost Of Tsushima

Jin from Ghost Of Tsushima

Players are given the control of Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima, a young samurai on a quest to protect Tsushima, and ultimately Japan, against the first Mongol invasion. The game takes many turns and questions the morality and sense of honor within a samurai, against invaders that feel no similar sense.

As players hone their skills with their blade, they will further their abilities to dismember their opponents and to make other enemies run in fear at just how quick and skilled they are with a blade. Ghost of Tsushima rewards those precise strikes with a lost limb or two.

5 The Witcher 3

Respected and loved by many as one of the best games of all time, The Witcher 3 does many things right, including the sense of gore in both the humans and monsters. As Geralt of Rivia, players will be using their steel swords against humans and silver against monsters. However, The Witcher 3 teaches players that men can be the monsters they fear, with a witcher ready to hunt them.

Players may not have control over the dismemberment system, but deal enough damage in a single blow, and it’s more than likely that Geralt is going to cut off a limb. Whether it’s a leg, arm, or even a head, bodies will certainly fall.

4 Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout New Vegas A trooper in an old west duster wields a big iron

It’s no surprise that the Fallout series is noted for its violence. It’s a wild wasteland out there, and in Fallout: New Vegas, players should bet on themselves to not get dismembered. Thanks to the Pipboy, Fallout: New Vegas players can have a very specific target. The Pipboy allows players to use V.A.T.S. (Valt-Tec Assisted Targeting System). This visual dynamic stat system means players can shoot what they target with ease.

With the power of certain weapons, limbs will be sure to explode in a gory fashion. Alternatively, there’s also a specific perk in Fallout: New Vegas where enemies may randomly explode into a gruesome mesh of blood and matter.

3 The Last Of Us Part 2

Peace never lasts forever. Nor does happiness. On a quest for revenge, Ellie finds an already broken world further fractured as she travels to Seattle. The Last of Us Part 2 has been incredibly divisive amongst fans for its treatment of certain characters, but what everyone can agree on, is the intense level of gruesome detail.

Bullet wounds, arrow wounds, and even stab marks, The Last of Us Part 2 exhibits a strong degree of realism not seen in other games. Shotgun and sniper blasts are so powerful that limbs become red mist, and even the infected struggle to survive without them.

2 Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Raiden with bloody sword.

There are few blades sharper than Raiden’s. In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Raiden’s weapon is capable of slicing clean through bone and metal. Not even buildings and melons are an issue when it comes to Raiden’s weapon prowess. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has a great dismemberment system in which the player takes control.

Time can slow for precise strikes, and Raiden will be able to cut off limbs like shredding through butter. The attention to detail means that Raiden can slice specific body parts, and make slices of an arm in one of the most precise displays of a dismemberment system yet.

1 Dead Space

When Isaac Clarke arrives on an abandoned spaceship, the Ishimura, he soon discovers that this is no ordinary engineering job. Dead Space is a true sci-fi horror, with plenty of scares and gore to make players wish they had just taken the day off. Dead Space will teach players quickly that dismemberment is the only way to survive.

With the plasma cutter and other weapons, players will have to aim for the limbs of the necromorphs to kill them. Simply shooting their heads and torsos is not enough. Limbs are a weak spot, making for a brilliant dismemberment system.
