As Friday night settles into Saturday, we present our weekly Game Rant Open Discussion post. We apologize for the tardiness.
For those who may be new, the Game Rant Open Discussion is a place where we recap some of the biggest stories from the previous week, and give our readers a chance to discuss the topics that most interest them. This week, we’ll be discussing Halo 5: Guardians, Sony’s Paris Game Week, and more.
Halo 5: Guardians Review
This was a big week for Xbox players thanks to the release of Halo 5: Guardians. The highly anticipated title performs well and in our opinion is definitely worth the purchase, though it’s still not a perfect game.
Probably the most interesting and surprising aspect to Halo 5 is how little players get to play the part of Master Chief. However, while most of the game is spent fighting as Locke, the gameplay is fun and engaging and definitely worth the time spent playing.
Be sure to check out our Halo 5: Guardians review.
Halo 5: Guardians is available now for Xbox One.
Sony Paris Games Week Reveals
During their Paris Game Week, Sony showed off numerous new trailers for both new and well-known upcoming titles. Among the trailers were a few titles that sparked a great deal of discussion and interest online.
One of these games, Detroit: Become Human didn’t provide a lot of detail about the gameplay or storyline, but considering it’s coming from Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls developer Quantic Dream, gamers are sure to remain interested.
New Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Trailer
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 hits shelves in one week, and there’s no ignoring the excitement first-person shooter fans have for the game. This is especially true after Activision released a new trailer for the game, showing off the highly anticipated returning Nuketown map.
Despite the fact that Call of Duty sales have struggled over the last couple years, Activision and Treyarch have been actively pushing Black Ops 3 to gamers. And while no numbers have yet been shared, it’s possible the title may help revive the franchise’s sales numbers. It’ll be interesting to see the outcome.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launches November 6, 2015 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
Star Wars Battlefront Sales Prediction
Speaking of shooters, another highly anticipated title in the genre is EA’s Star Wars Battlefront, set to launch next month. After a massively successful open beta, EA revealed this week they anticipate the title will sell over 13 million copies, well above the original estimate of nine million.
If that’s the case, it would make Star Wars Battlefront one of EA’s most successful games in the last few years. After the massive success of Battlefield 3, sales struggled for both Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline.
Star Wars Battlefront is set to release November 17, 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
PlayStation 4 Sales Reach Nearly 30 Million Units
It’s well known that over the last two years, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has experienced stellar sales, beating Xbox One in sales almost every month since launch. And according to Sony’s latest financial report, the company has sold roughly 29.3 million PlayStation 4 units.
Since the two units launched in 2013, Xbox One has been playing catch up to PlayStation 4, with little success. However, Microsoft did mention this week that they expect tens of millions of Xbox 360 owners will upgrade to Xbox One thanks to backward compatibility. It’s possible this, along with Dell’s Xbox One Black Friday deal, may give Xbox One the edge during the holiday season, but chances are it won’t fully close the gap to PlayStation 4’s sales. Many thought Microsoft’s console would match and possibly surpass PlayStation 4’s total sales after last year’s price drop, but that ultimately didn’t happen. A similar outcome will likely take place this year.
