Telltale Games has been been adapting big franchise properties for a while now, but it had a meteoric rise within the last year with the success of The Walking Dead series and the promising first episode of the Fables adaptation The Wolf Among Us. With the Season Two of the Walking Dead imminent, the small company has quickly become one of the most sought after developers in the gaming world.
Just a few weeks ago, Telltale let on that they were working on some “dream IPs” that they couldn’t yet reveal, although today it seems the cat is out of the bag.
Thanks to IGN, it looks like geekdom might be in for a match made in gaming heaven. According to “multiple and reliable sources” Telltale is about to embark on a voyage into Westeros as the developer is going to be tackling the Game of Thrones series. What isn’t entirely clear right now is if the game is a ‘Game of Thrones’ game (The HBO Series) or ‘A Song of Ice And Fire’ game (the title of the book series). Whether the game will be canonical with the TV show and feature the series’ actors (or not) remains to be seen.
In fact, there is almost nothing else to go on. Details such as whether the game will be episodic like the majority of Telltale’s titles, who it will involve, where in the timeline it will take place, the characters it will use, if it treads old ground or takes place away from the main storyline, are all still a mystery.
It is worth noting that none of this has been officially confirmed by Telltale Games, who are remaining quiet on the whole situation for now. IGN reached out to the developer directly for confirmation and Senior Vice-President of Publishing, Steve Allison replied:
“We get these sorts of rumors about what we could be working on next cropping up all the time. Officially we have no comment.”
While it is not a denial, the reluctance to confirm the project will place doubt in some heads. It is up to every individual reader just how excited they are willing to let themselves get about this, but at the very least, IGN seems pretty certain of the project’s existence.
Game of Thrones has a checkered past in video games and since the show rose to pop culture prominence, many have been wondering if the series would ever get a worthwhile video game. While nothing is a sure thing, if the game is indeed a reality, hopes will be sky high for the prospect of a Telltale-developed installment. The series is famous for its political intrigue and betrayal which could lead to a lot of tough moral choices, which simultaneously, Telltale is famous for incorporating into gameplay.
Telltale currently has more The Wolf Among Us episodes and The Walking Dead Season 2 on its immediate to-do list, so it might be a little while until the studio gets a Game of Thrones adaptation out and into consumer’s hands. But rest assured, at least for the moment, it looks like winter is coming for gamers.
