Over the past eight years, the sensation that is Game of Thrones has kept a great number of fans rapt with its detailed world building and surprising storytelling. However, as the series draws to an end, with its eighth and final season, some of these fans are taking issue with how the conclusion to Game of Thrones is being approached. Indeed, some feel strongly on this matter, and this has caused a new internet petition to gain a great deal of traction.

Started just last week, a new Change.org petition is direct in its intention, asking for a "remake of Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers." The petition continues by stating that Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss "have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers" and that the series "deserves a final season that makes sense."

Certainly, these are some harsh criticisms being leveled against those behind Game of Thrones Season 8, but, considering the response, it appears that a great number of fans agree with the sentiment. More specifically, at the time of writing, the petition has nearly 450,000 signatures from Game of Thrones fans, with a stated goal of reaching 500,000. At this point, obtaining that goal seems like a foregone conclusion.

"Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!" the creator of the Game of Thrones petition writes. A lofty demand indeed, and, despite the support the petitioner is currently receiving, it is hard to imagine how it could possibly become a reality. That said, there is still a chance that this much beloved series could be changed in a way that might appease dissatisfied fans, though it would not be in the way that the Game of Thrones petition is requesting.

Specifically, many fans will know that the Game of Thrones TV adaptation has extended beyond the novels that the show was initially based on. As such, the final novels in the series could offer a different take on the narrative conclusion, assuming that George R.R. Martin, who is rumored to be working on a game with From Software, ever completes them. While this may not be considered the ideal scenario, those that simply want something else from the Game of Thrones finale may find it preferable to the alternative.

The final season of Game of Thrones premiered on HBO on Sunday, April 14.
