The proposed Jon Snow spinoff that HBO's Game of Thrones fans have been yearning for may not be a sure thing.

In the wake of the 2019 wrap of Game of Thrones and the wild success of the recent House of the Dragon, Hollywood has been abuzz about the possible sequel series, which would pick up Jon Snow where fans left him, returning to life beyond the wall after killing his beloved Danaerys to save Westeros. Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow for the entirety of the original series, first proposed to HBO the idea of a spinoff devoted to him, which, at the time, seemed like a project that would do well. While Harington and his former Game of Thrones co-star Emilia Clarke have fueled fan fervor and discussion, the show has not become real.

In an interview with Deadline, HBO Drama Chief Francesca Orsi indicated she is still unsure if HBO can make the spinoff happen. "We’re just working deeply with the writers to get it in shape for potential greenlight, but at this point, no, no determination on whether it can go all the way," Orsi said. As for the other Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, Orsi said, "It’s so new and nascent, we don’t even have many scripts on them so still too early to talk about them."

With new obstacles like the ongoing writer’s strike delays and many streaming networks tightening their belts, the possibility of a Jon Snow spinoff seems further away than ever. However, Harington still has hope it will happen. "At the end of the show when we find him in that cell, he’s preparing to be beheaded and he wants to be. He’s done," Harington said at a Game of Thrones convention last year. "The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse."

While this may be a disappointment to some, fans still have House of the Dragon season 2 to look forward to as early as next year and another prequel series in production, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, based on George R. R. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas. The prequel is set 90 years before Game of Thrones and follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg).

With a richly built world and a wealth of storylines available in Martin's source materials and from enterprising HBO writer’s rooms, more spinoffs, sequels, and prequels will surely come down the pipeline. It remains to be seen whether the Jon Snow series will be one of them.

Game of Thrones is available on Max.
