George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series has been incredibly popular even before the television adaptation began airing on HBO. In 2003, Fantasy Flight released a board game based on the series that was updated in 2011 around the release of the show's first season according to Dicebreaker, and now A Game of Thrones: The Board Game will be releasing on Steam later this year.

The digital edition of the Game of Thrones board game, being developed by Dire Wolf, was first announced by publisher Asmodee Digital with a teaser trailer in late 2019. Not much has been revealed since, until the release window was announced on June 17 with a Steam update that says it is "one of the top-selling strategy board games and part of the 150 top-rated titles of all time on BoardGameGeek."

Up to six players can take part in the game, representing six houses fighting for control of the Iron Throne, and playing the digital edition will allow players to go up against AI opponents and take part in a leaderboard system. Other properties such as Resident Evil 3 have also announced board game adaptations in recent months.

Though many fans were left disappointed by the rushed final season of Game of Thrones on HBO, hopefully the digital board game can provide some closure whenever it is released. If not, Martin is still penning more books in his ongoing series to release sometime in the future.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game will be available on Steam Q3 2020.
