With the new trilogy of Star Wars films coming to a close after the next installment, there have been many rumors about what is next on the slate for the franchise, aside from the one-off Star Wars Story films. Solo is sure to entertain, but the episodic, long-form stories are the bread and butter of the franchise. The latest announcement from the official Star Wars team confirms that yet another series of connected films are on the way from some iconic creators.

Shortly before The Last Jedi hit theaters, it was announced that the Episode 8 director, Rian Johnson, would be creating a new series of connected films in the Star Wars universe. Apparently, he's not the only creator being offered that exciting contract. Longtime Game of Thrones show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are now also slated to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

The pair released this joint statement about the upcoming projects...

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since... We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Although the pair were recently in hot water with some fans due to controversy surrounding Confederate, the team is still responsible for one of the most popular shows of the modern era. It's no surprise that Star Wars would want to capitalize on that popularity by bringing the team onboard. Considering the pair's usual material, it will be interesting to see how dark and mature these films will be...

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, released the following statement about the announcement...

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today... Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Check back for updates as we learn more about these upcoming projects.

There is currently no official title or release window for the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Star Wars films.
