Game Builder Garage only released days ago, but some fans have already mastered the game creation tool and created impressive projects, some of them inspired by Nintendo properties. One such fan has re-created the gameplay of Super Mario Kart, nearly thirty years after Super Mario Kart's release.

The recently-released Game Builder Garage is a Nintendo Switch-exclusive suite of creative tools focused on letting amateur game developers easily and quickly create games. The suite offers all the tools needed to create new game experiences or re-create existing ones, and some Nintendo fans are paying tribute to their favorite games by making versions of them in Game Builder Garage.

Twitter user ZeldaBoi1 took it upon themself to re-create Super Mario Kart, complete with the 2D sprites originally used out of hardware limitations. The results are impressively close to the original, though with some extra embellishments like real-time shadows for the Kart driver. The re-creation is available to download with Game Builder Garage's code-based sharing system, and could be a fun way for Mario Kart 8 players to spend some time while they wait for Mario Kart 9.

An update was released after the initial version to allow the player to reverse, as well as the already existing moveset of acceleration, drifting and changing racers. Nintendo fans have been especially active with Mario Kart fan content recently, with another fan not long ago making an impressive mockup of the fictional Paper Mario Kart. ZeldaBoi1's Game Builder Garage version of Super Mario Kart is especially impressive, given that the game creation tool has only been out for a few days.

Especially considering Nintendo's recent push with Mario Kart content such as Mario Kart Live, fans of the series are eager to see a new entry. While Super Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch Online is another game from that series that fans can enjoy, Game Builder Garage will give fans a new opportunity to create their own Mario Kart experiences while they wait for official news from Nintendo. Given Mario Kart's dedicated fanbase, the possibilities are somewhat expansive, with some kind of multiplayer adaptation being a likely next step.

Nintendo fans, time and again, truly go above and beyond on their fan projects. Even with the impressive Game Builder Garage creations already available, there will no doubt be many more in the future. Still, many players who don't own a Switch may feel like they are missing out, but fortunately alternative game creation tools are available on a variety of systems.

Game Builder Garage is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
