During a live-stream yesterday, Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards, mentioned that the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie might be featured at some point during the awards show. Given the significant amount of positive reception the movie has received since revealing the redesign of Sonic, it's safe to say some fans are looking forward to seeing the Blue Blur at The Game Awards.
The Game Awards is a yearly event hosted by Geoff Keighley in which fans and industry professionals gather together to honor and celebrate the best gaming accomplishments that occurred during the year, as well as show off world premiere trailers and new content for a variety of gaming titles. Although it is a movie and not a video game, given the success and history of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, it makes sense as to why the Sonic the Hedgehog movie would be featured at The Game Awards.
On December 8th 2019, Geoff Keighley hosted a small fifteen-minute live-stream from inside the Los Angeles theater where The Game Awards will commence. Over the course of the live-stream, Keighley explained that about 10 new game announcements will be made and briefly mentioned how the new Sonic might play into that. Since the release of the new trailer and the induction of a newly designed Sonic, fans have begun to speculate in terms of what this could mean.
A prevailing theory online that has gotten fans very excited is the idea of a new Sonic game, which there hasn't been a first-party Sonic game since the release of both Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces back in 2017. Though, ever since Sonic Team chief, Takashi Iizuka, made the announcement at SXSW back in March of 2019, many members of the gaming community are curious as to what the new game could be, seeing as it was not featured at E3 this year and there has not been much to report on since the announcement was made.
Having said this, it still seems rather unlikely that a trailer for a new Sonic game will be shown off at The Game Awards this year. When Keighley mentioned Sonic during the live-stream, he was specifically referring to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, so it's hard to imagine how a new game could tie into the release of the movie. Unless it's a Sonic game that is based on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which would be quite strange all things considered.
In any case, The Game Awards are set to premiere live on December 12th and the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie is set to release on February 14th, 2020.
