December 4th update: Keighley's comments during the podcast were taken out of context. The Game Awards creator said that "That kind of stuff is part of what we’re thinking about now. It’s not just about the ‘30-second CG teaser for insane franchise sequel #6,’ which some people want..."

Keighley did not explicitly state that The Game Awards 2017 will feature an announcement about a sixth franchise game as this article originally suggested. Game Rant regrets the error and would like to apologize to readers for any confusion.

The Game Awards 2017 is fast approaching as the annual industry event promises major reveals about some of the most highly anticipated games and well-loved franchises. Ahead of the show, which takes place later this week, creator and host Geoff Keighley continues to tease these big announcements.

Speaking during the Kotaku Splitscreen podcast, Keighley says that the sixth entry in an "insane franchise" will be revealed during the show. A 30-second preview will be presented to officially announce the game. Keighley doesn't reveal any specifics on what this new franchise entry may be, but The Game Awards creator does say that “some people really want it, some people don’t.”

As to be expected, Keighley's comments have been met with mass speculation as fans try to figure out which game that he is referring to. So many series are on their sixth game that plenty of franchises fit the bill.

One popular suggestion is The Elder Scrolls 6, which would be a hugely popular follow up to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. That is probably the most anticipated sixth entry in a series, but given that development on the game has not fully begun yet, it's unlikely that Bethesda is ready to formally announce the game during something like The Game Awards. There's also the fact that most people really do want to play the game and there are very few people who aren't interested in The Elder Scrolls 6.

Another popular theory is that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be announced during the show. The chances of this happening are very slim, not least because Grand Theft Auto 5 still makes a lot of money for Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two. Grand Theft Auto 6 probably won't happen until the well of GTA 5 money has dried up.

Instead, the game that Keighley is probably referring to is Soul Calibur 6. Just a few weeks ago there were rumors that Devil May Cry 5 and Soul Calibur 6 would be announced at PlayStation Experience 2017, the Sony event which takes place the same week as The Game Awards. Given how close the two events are to each other, the original poster of those rumors may have just gotten the specifics mixed up, even if they got the general timeframe for the reveal correct.

Whatever this sixth franchise entry ends up being, it will be just one of several massive reveals for The Game Awards 2017. It's all shaping up to be incredibly exciting, so fans should watch this space.

The Game Awards 2017 takes place on December 7, 2017.
